It is spoken in Spain, Mexico, Andorra, the vast majority of Central and South America, and there are many Spanish speakers in the US, Morocco, Western Sahara, and the Philippines. This fosters the linguistic diversity of the Spanish language and the development of dialects thanks to social, geographic, or stylistic factors.

As far as our language is concerned, these differences can be first perceived among the different regions of the Iberian Peninsula, and they become even bigger when compared to the modalities used in other Spanish speaking countries across the Atlantic. Within Spain’s Spanish, two varieties are often distinguished, dividing the country between the central/ northern region and the south. The latter was spread around the Canary Islands and America, which is why some linguists call it “Atlantic Spanish”. Andalusian accents belong to this group, since there are so many variations that we cannot refer to a single Andalusian accent.

In some places in Andalucia the distinction between S and Z is still observed, the use of both letters with a single sound is also widespread, and the origin of the accent features known as “seseo” and “ceceo”. It is also quite common to relax or aspirate the pronunciation of S at the end of a syllable or word. In fact, Andalusian accents would provide enough material to write several articles, so we will move on to America.

Southern Spanish dialects spread in the New World, since the trade routes started from Seville and passed through the Canary Islands. Immigration from Andalusia, Extremadura, and the Canary Islands was also a contributing factor. The most common features in Latin American Spanish are “seseo”, the relaxed pronunciation of S, and the use of the pronoun “ustedes” both in formal and familiar situations. Of course, there are also features that are specific to individual countries: the use of “vos” instead of “tú” in Argentina, for example, and a vast amount of vocabulary: are you familiar with terms such as guate, pucho, chancho, plata, manejar, morocha…? It would be great to compile many more of those working together. For example, our community of people taking part in the Words application project has already contributed 2,700 words and expressions from different Spanish-speaking regions. If you have a Facebook profile you can connect and help spread the words and expressions that are typical of your region:

http://words.transparent.com/home/

Our language is quite rich… See you soon!

El español es una de las lenguas con mayor número de hablantes en nuestro planeta, tras el chino y el inglés, y uno de los seis idiomas oficiales de la ONU.
