There were a boy and a girl from Chile who lived in my town and I was fascinated by their bilingual background and they were the first ones to teach me the basics.<\/p>\n<p>Tomislav\u2019s dad was the manager of a hotel here and Ximena was from another family of Chileans living in Bebedouro too. I hung out with them a lot and then I found my love for the Spanish language. One experience that is very dear to my heart is when I spent Christmas Eve with these two families; it seemed like I was in Chile, because everyone was speaking Spanish and I was mesmerized, just listening to that beautiful language.<\/p>\n<p>Tomislav went back to Chile for army obligations and he passed away 8 years ago from brain cancer. Ximena stayed in Brazil and she\u2019s currently working as a journalist in S\u00e3o Paulo. I interviewed her over Skype. Y cuando ten\u00eda como unos 3 a\u00f1os de edad empec\u00e9 a frecuentar la escuela aqui en Brasil y ah\u00ed me coloqu\u00e9 en contacto con el portugu\u00e9s. Despu\u00e9s en el 81 me fui a vivir un a\u00f1o en Chile y all\u00e1 me alfabetizaron en espa\u00f1ol y en franc\u00e9s tambi\u00e9n. Y despu\u00e9s en 82 volvimos a Brasil cuando, en ese per\u00edodo que vivi en Chile a mi se me olvid\u00f3 el portugu\u00e9s, por supuesto. Pero despu\u00e9s que empec\u00e9 a ir al colegio aqui me alfabetizaron en portugu\u00e9s y recuper\u00e9 mi portugu\u00e9s. Yo creo que nacer en una familia que te posibilita el contacto con dos idiomas es una experiencia riqu\u00edsima adem\u00e1s los dos son idiomas muy bonitos que tienen la sonoridad interesante y son dos idiomas que tienen grandes escritores entonces siempre tuve el privilegio de estar en contacto con, tanto con la cultura chilena como con la cultura brasile\u00f1a. Ahora soy periodista y el espa\u00f1ol tambi\u00e9n me ayud\u00f3 a abrir muchas puertas en mi trabajo entonces es algo que yo creo que es un diferencial muy grande en el mercado brasile\u00f1o porque las multinacionales ahora est\u00e1n descubriendo Brasil entonces sus headquarters que estaban en Miami se est\u00e1n viniendo a S\u00e3o Paulo y yo veo que las empresas ahora no, la persona no solo tiene que tener un ingl\u00e9s fluente como tambi\u00e9n un espa\u00f1ol fluente. Y yo creo que eso es algo natural de la integraci\u00f3n de Brasil con el restante de Latinoam\u00e9rica, algo que se demor\u00f3 un poco para, para que ocurriera pero yo creo que algo es libremente en la econom\u00eda aqui en Brasil.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I first started studying Spanish when I was in high school.
