{"id":25,"date":"2008-02-11T10:52:38","date_gmt":"2008-02-11T14:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/?p=25"},"modified":"2008-02-11T10:52:38","modified_gmt":"2008-02-11T14:52:38","slug":"pronunciation-natural-stress-and-written-accents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/pronunciation-natural-stress-and-written-accents\/","title":{"rendered":"Pronunciation, Natural Stress, and Written Accents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><b>PART I<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">One of the things I often noticed about my Spanish students was the difficulty they had knowing where to place the stress when pronouncing words.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>I don\u2019t remember learning this explicitly in my high school Spanish classes (although I probably did) and I suppose I expected my students to intuit this aspect of the language\u2014I tried to avoid bogging them down with tedious \u201crules\u201d and instead wanted them to build awareness on their own.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>This worked for some of my students, but for others, it simply did not.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>For them, I broke out the rules.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>And since correct stress (knowing where the emphasis-denoted by a written accent or not-goes in a given word) is one of the quickest ways of improving your oral skills and facilitating comprehension for those listening to you, maybe this is one place where the rules are worth really nailing down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Knowing these rules also, in turn, tells you where the accents belong when writing in Spanish, something many native speakers are not always great at themselves! <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">So, here it goes. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\t<\/span>In Spanish- as opposed to English- the natural stress has a fixed spot: any deviation from this placement requires a written accent.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span><b>For all words ending in a vowel, n, or s, the natural stress falls on the vowel in the second-to-last syllable.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>For any words ending in a consonant OTHER than n or s, the natural stress is on the vowel in the last syllable. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Because of this, we know that <i>casa<\/i> is pronounced \u201ccAsa\u201d, <i>examen <\/i>is pronounced \u201cexAmen\u201d, and <i>papel<\/i> is pronounced \u201cpapEl\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>When we pluralize words, we always want the stress to remain on the same vowel as the singular.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>This explains why, in the words above, only the plural of <i>examen<\/i> requires a written accent: <i>casas <\/i>and <i>papeles <\/i>are fine the way they are, but <i>ex\u00e1menes<\/i> needs the accent to signal that we should say \u201cexAmenes\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Without an accent, the word would be pronounced \u201cexamEnes\u201d and that would be incorrect. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Got it??
