When O comes before words that start with an O or HO it must be replaced by U.<\/p>\n<p><em>plata u oro<\/em> (silver or gold)<br \/>\n<em>minutos u horas <\/em>(minutes or hours)<\/p>\n<p>2. When O comes between numbers, we must replace it by \u00d3 (with an accent) so it is not confused with zero.<\/p>\n<p>8 \u00f3 9 (8 or 9)<br \/>\n9 \u00f3 8 (9 or 8 )<br \/>\n12 \u00f3 15 (12 or 15)<br \/>\n8 \u00f3 80 (8 or 80)<br \/>\n20 \u00f3 30 (20 or 30)<\/p>\n<p>When numbers are written out here\u2019s what happens:<\/p>\n<p><em>ocho <strong>o<\/strong> nueve<br \/>\nnueve <strong>u<\/strong> ocho<br \/>\ndoce <strong>o<\/strong> quince<br \/>\nocho <strong>u<\/strong> ochenta<br \/>\nveinte <strong>o<\/strong> treinta<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what happens with <em>Y<\/em> and <em>E<\/em> (meaning &#8220;and&#8221;):<\/p>\n<p>When Y comes before a word which starts with I or HI (followed by a consonant), it must be replaced by E.<\/p>\n<p><em>naranjas <strong>e<\/strong> higos<\/em> (oranges and figs)<br \/>\n<em>fabricantes <strong>e<\/strong> importadores<\/em> (manufacturers and importers)<\/p>\n<p>However, when we have the diphthong HIE, we must use Y.<\/p>\n<p><em>A\u00f1ade leche <strong>y<\/strong> hierve.<\/em> (Add milk and boil it.)<br \/>\n<em>flores <strong>y<\/strong> hierbas <\/em>(flowers and herbs)<\/p>\n<p>Nos vemos prontito.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>O and U mean \u201cor\u201d, but their use follows some rules. 1.
