by Masternet82

Hello friends!

Today I’m here a bit sleepy, because I have just practised one of my favourite national sports: the siesta!

A Spanish word, which comes from the Latin expression “sixth hour”, it refers to the time in which people took a rest from their daily labours.

I don’t know how many of you have the possibility of enjoying it, but I am sure that at least you have heard something about it, since it is a very Spanish custom, mainly in the summer. For those who don’t know what the “siesta” is, I will explain it: it is the action of sleeping for a few minutes, between twenty and thirty, after having lunch. It is not only a Spanish habit, but it has a biological explanation: the diversion of blood flow down to the digestive system after eating provokes a little drowsiness. Lunch is the main meal in the Mediterranean diet, so it is usual to be sleepy after eating dessert.

The benefits of the nap are so numerous that the NASA has been the last institution to publish a study about it: it lowers cardiovascular risk, releases and prevents stress, it helps increase concentration, as well as our memory and learning, and it allows us to go on with our working day with more energy. Nevertheless, it must not be much longer, because it might alter the biological clock, and provoke insomnia.

As you can see, after ending a hard morning at work, and filling our tummy, nothing better than a good siesta to continue enjoying our evening full of energy. By the way, we also have the “Sheep siesta “, or “the Clergyman siesta”, this one for the not so busy ones, since it is the siesta done just before eating. Does anyone fancy having a siesta?

¡Hola amigos!
