cansado de soñar;
pero TRAS LA FRONTERA está su hogar,
su mundo y SU CIUDAD.
Piensa que la ALAMBRADA sólo
es un trozo de metal
algo que nunca puede detener
sus ansias de volar.

Libre,
y SABRÉ LO QUE ES AL FIN LA LIBERTAD.

Con su amor por bandera se marchó
cantando una canción;
marchaba tan feliz que NO ESCUCHÓ
LA VOZ QUE LE LLAMÓ.
Y TENDIDO EN EL SUELO SE QUEDÓ,
SONRIENDO Y SIN HABLAR;
SOBRE SU PECHO, FLORES CARMÉSÍ
BROTABAN SIN CESAR.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_QaKmERzEE

It is interesting how sometimes we spend our whole life hearing a song, but not really listening to it. This has happened to me with “Libre” (Free), by the Spanish singer Nino Bravo. A few days ago, I found out the story behind the song, and I would like to share it with you. Even though his name is not mentioned in the lyrics, the song speaks about a young construction worker, Peter Fechter, the first German who died trying to jump the Berlin Wall.

Together with another young man, he prepared the flight, with such bad luck that, when Peter was about to jump to the West Berlin side, the soldiers told them to stop, and shot them. His workmate was not hit, but Peter was shot in the pelvis, and fell down in no man’s land. For fifty minutes he remained gravely injured, asking for help, but the Soviet soldiers who had shot him did not provide any aid, and the American soldiers just threw a first aid kit to him, which he couldn’t use because of the seriousness of the wound. There were a lot of eyewitnesses, including journalists, but nobody dared to help him, fearing to be shot too. Obviously, he died.

Berliners from both sides were witnesses of his agony, and understood how difficult the situation of those who decided to escape from East Berlin would be. The following day there were demonstrations and protests in the West side.

Between 1961 and 1989, more than 260 persons died trying to cross the Wall; this number is increased quite a lot by factoring in those who died trying to cross the border between both Germanies, or the ones who went to jail. Today, a monument commemorates his death; in 1997 two soldiers were judged, and sentenced to one year in prison for shooting him. On November 9th 1989 the way towards West Germany was allowed, and the first cracks in the wall appeared. Today, the Wall is only a hard memory, and its fragments collectors’ items. Another odd piece of information: the last victim of the wall, Chris Gueffroy, was almost 20 years old when he died in 1989.
