The relative superlative describes a noun within a context of a larger group. Some examples in English:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Juan is the tallest kid in his classroom.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Mar\u00eda is the smartest student in the whole school.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> This is the most beautiful woman I&#8217;ve ever seen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We form the relative superlative with the following model:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Subject + verb + el\/la\/los\/las + m\u00e1s + adjective.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here&#8217;s how the sentences above are in Spanish:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Juan is <strong>the tallest<\/strong> kid in his classroom. = <em>Juan es <strong>el<\/strong> ni\u00f1o <strong>m\u00e1s alto<\/strong> en su aula.<\/em><br \/>\nMar\u00eda is <strong>the smartest<\/strong> student in the whole school. = <em>Mar\u00eda es <strong>la<\/strong> alumna <strong>m\u00e1s inteligente<\/strong> en la escuela entera.<\/em><br \/>\nThis is <strong>the most beautiful<\/strong> woman I&#8217;ve ever seen. = <em>\u00c9sta es <strong>la<\/strong> mujer <strong>m\u00e1s bonita<\/strong> que ya he conocido.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The absolute superlative does not show the noun within a context of a larger group. Rather, it emphasizes the quality of the noun. Some examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>She&#8217;s extremely talented.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> He&#8217;s a very smart boy.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> This good is unbelievably good!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In English we form the absolute superlative with an intensifying adverb (extremely, very, awfully, unbelievably) + adjective. In Spanish we put the endings <em>\u00edsimo(s)<\/em> and <em>\u00edsima(s)<\/em>. In Spanish, prefer to use the<em> \u00edsimo(s<\/em>) and <em>\u00edsima(s)<\/em> endings rather than use intensifying adverbs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She&#8217;s <strong>extremely talented<\/strong>. = <em>Ella es talentos<strong>\u00edsima<\/strong>.<\/em><br \/>\nHe&#8217;s a <strong>very smart<\/strong> boy. = <em>Es un ni\u00f1o list<strong>\u00edsimo<\/strong>.<\/em><br \/>\nThis food is <strong>unbelievably good<\/strong>. = <em>Esta comida es riqu<strong>\u00edsima<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And this is not all! In informal Spanish we also have prefixes <strong>re-, -que, super-, archi-<\/strong>. Check out some examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mi amigo Juan Antonio es <strong>resimp\u00e1tico<\/strong>. = My friend Juan Antonio is extremely friendly. (We could also use <em>retesimp\u00e1tico, requetesimp\u00e1tico, supersimp\u00e1tico<\/em>, etc.)<br \/>\n<em>Mi abuela era una mujer <strong>rebuena<\/strong>.<\/em> = My grandma was a very good woman.<br \/>\n<em>Lo hiciste <strong>requete mal<\/strong>. Tendr\u00e1s que hacerlo de nuevo.<\/em> = You did that very poorly.
