When we read and write in Spanish, or any other language, we need to provide this text (an e-mail, a letter, a report, a memo, or even a simple note) with cohesion and coherence. Conjunctions <\/em>and discourse markers<\/em> play a major role in connecting your ideas logically over long stretches of text or speech. They also make your output a lot richer. Here are some of the most common:<\/p>\n

Y \/ e <\/strong> (and)
\nNi<\/strong> (nor)
\nO \/ u <\/strong> (or)
\nPero<\/strong> (but)
\nMas<\/strong> (but)
\nAunque<\/strong> (although \/ though)
\nNo solo \u2026 sino tambi\u00e9n<\/strong> (not only \u2026 but also \u2026)
\nSin embargo<\/strong> (however)
\nAntes<\/strong> (before \/ rather)
\nAntes bien<\/strong> (rather)
\nM\u00e1s bien<\/strong> (although \/ even though)
\nSi bien<\/strong> (although \/ even though)
\nA pesar de <\/strong> (in spite of the fact that)
\nCon todo <\/strong> (in spite of)
\nAs\u00ed pues<\/strong> (so \/ therefore)
\nAs\u00ed que <\/strong> (so)
\nConque <\/strong> (so)
\nEs decir <\/strong> (that is)
\nEsto es <\/strong> (this is)
\nLuego<\/strong> (so \/ therefore \/ afterwards)
\nO sea <\/strong> (in other words, that is)
\nPor esto<\/strong> (because of…)
\nPor (lo) tanto<\/strong> (therefore \/ so)
\nPor consiguiente<\/strong> (therefore \/ so)
\nPues <\/strong> (since \/ as)<\/p>\n

So next time you’re writing or reading a text, pay close attention to these markers. Try to use as many as you can in your speech or writing in order to sound authentic. Start with one or two at a time until you feel comfortable using them. Before you know it, you will start connecting your sentences in more complex and varied ways.<\/p>\n
