You can read the post I wrote about that here. Today I want to explain how it is celebrated in a particular place: Lanjarón.

Lanjarón is a very small city located in the western part of the Granada Alpujarra. Each year since 1980, its inhabitants celebrate Midsummer’s Eve in honour of San Juan Bautista (John the Baptist) with its Fiesta del Agua y del Jamon (Water and Ham Festival). I have to tell you: don’t expect too much ham, but a lot of water!

On 23 June at midnight, it starts the biggest water fight in Spain. Not only locals, but also visitants soak each other with water guns and buckets. Even old ladies water the crowd from their balconies, using hose pipes and buckets. Some are wicked enough to have kept water in the fridge… can you imagine the feeling when you are soaked to the bone with such cold water? Nevertheless, the fight is so intense that you don’t mind.

When the whistle blows the water is over, and the cautious people who got some dry clothes change them, and go to have some tapas (ham time), while watching the fireworks and enjoying the festival. Don’t you think it’s worth getting wet?
