http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_lQvD9uOHw&feature=related

Some days ago a great Spanish actor, Sancho Gracia, died. His voice and his image are associated with my childhood, because when I was a child I never lost any episode of the series that made him famous: Curro Jimenez. Curiously, I’m watching it these days. Speaking with a friend, and revising his movies, he told me that Sancho had given life in another series to one of the most famous murderers of Franco’s Spain: Jose Maria Manuel Manuel Pablo de la Cruz Jarabo Perez-Moris, simply known as Jarabo.

Jarabo was the last culprit condemned to the death penalty, when it was still applied in Spain. He was condemned because bloody murder of four persons, being a pregnant woman one of them. It is said that he was a womanizer, very attractive, who sponged off his family until he squandered his fortune. His romance with a married woman, and the diamond ring that she gave him to cover debts, were the beginning of the tragedy. Jarabo had pawned the jewel, and didn’t have money to recover it when his lover asked him for it in an awkward and passionate letter. After leaving the letter she wrote him as a pledge too, and not having cash enough, he decided to solve the situation his way.

After going to the pawnshop owner’s house, he murdered in cold blood the servant, and the house owners. He didn’t hesitate to modify the scene of the crime in order to make it look like a crime of passion, and after drinking quite a lot of alcohol, he spent the night sleeping in that improvised pantheon. The following day he went to the pawnshop, and killed the second owner, the only witness still alive.

He was arrested one day later, while collecting the blood stained suit he had left in the dry cleaner’s. He first denied everything, but he ended up by confessing that he had killed for love, to recover the jewel and the letter of the only woman he had loved in his life. Nevertheless, he didn’t get them.

The crime had an enormous impact in the Spanish society, the press published collectibles with this history. On July 4, 1959, Jarabo was the last executed convict with garrote vil in our country. Probably because of that, his cruel legend still lasts.

Hace algunos días falleció un gran actor español, Sancho Gracia.
