The verb poner<\/strong> (to put) is widely used and in today’s post let’s learn its basic meanings.<\/p>\n

Poner<\/strong> means basically to put, to place something somewhere.<\/p>\n

\u00bfD\u00f3nde has puesto las llave del coche? – Where have you put the car keys?
\nTodav\u00eda no s\u00e9 d\u00f3nde voy a poner ese cuadro. – I still don’t know where I’m going to put that picture.
\nPon agua a la sopa pues est\u00e1 muy gruesa. – Add water to the soup because it’s too thick.
\nLa gallina puso huevos anoche. – The hen laid eggs last night.<\/p>\n

It can also means “to invest”:<\/p>\n

\u00bfCu\u00e1nto pusiste en el juego? – How much did you gamble?
\nTendremos que poner 300.000 euros en este negocio. – We’ll have to invest 30,000 euros in thsi business.<\/p>\n

Poner<\/strong> also expresses the idea of changing an aspect of something, someone’s attitude, mood or status.<\/p>\n

Vamos a poner fin a esta situaci\u00f3n. – Let’s put an end to this situation.
\nSi quieres salir, pon el coche en rev\u00e9s. – If you want to leave, put the car in reverse.
\nLo que dijo me puso en un aprieto. – What he said put me in a fix.
\nDespertarme muy temprano me pone de muy mal humor. – Waking up too early puts me in a bad mood.
\n\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 vas a poner tu casa en venta? – Why are you putting your house up for sale?
\nNo pongas mala cara a causa de eso. – Don’t make a long face because of that.<\/p>\n

We use poner<\/strong> when we say what is in the movies or at a theater:<\/p>\n

Hoy ponen una peli de horror en la tele. – They’re showing a horror movie on TV.
\nSi vas al teatro tienes que saber qu\u00e9 pondr\u00e1n. – If you’re going to the theater you have to know what they’re showing.
\nPon la tele que va a empezar el noticiero. – Turn the TV on because the news is about to start.<\/p>\n

Se puso de barro hasta los muslos. – He had mud up to his thighs.
\nSe puso morado de caramelos. – He pigged out on candies.
\nSe puso muy nervioso antes de la entrevista. – He got very nervous before the interview.
\n\u00bfA qu\u00e9 hora se pone el sol? – What time does the sun set?
\nSi te pones, seguro que tendr\u00e1s \u00e9xito. – If you try hard, I’m sure you’ll be successful.
\nTengo que ponerme las gafas antes de leer. – I have to put my glasse on before reading.
\nMe puse muy triste cuando escuch\u00e9 la noticia de que se hab\u00eda muerto. – I got very sad when I heard the news that he had died.
\nSe puso rojo de rabia. – He was red with anger.
\nSe puso a leer cuando lleg\u00f3 a casa. – He started reading when he got home.<\/p>\n
