Two days ago we had a general strike in Spain, as well as in some other European countries such as Portugal, Italy or Greece. Newspapers wrote about the first Iberian general strike, as both countries in the peninsula decided to stop for one day. People went on demonstrations in almost every single city, some people didn’t go to work (the ones who still have a job, obviously) some shops and business were closed, and all that as a protest against our government latest policies, reducing some of our fundamental rights concerning education and health, and against some European requirements concerning this financial crisis that is devastating some countries in Europe.

The strike was organized by the two major labor unions, UGT (General Union of Workers) and CCOO (Communist Labor Union), and people from small towns and villages went to the capital cities to protest. There were also a lot of pickets, trying to inform and prevent people not convinced by this pressure method (strike) to go to work, and join them.

As in any other social manifestation, it is funny to read the statistics after them, depending on who published the amount of people involved: according to the employers, there was only a 12% of the population who joined the strike, but if we read the labor unions numbers, it goes up to 76%. It is a pity that there had been some violent incidents, as usual. You can see images of the stike in El Pais, a Spanish newspaper.
