Today we have a little grammar post about reflexive pronouns in Spanish.\u00a0In English we have the reflexive pronouns to say that we perform and receive an action:<\/p>\n

I saw myself in the mirror.<\/em>
\n Enjoy yourself!<\/em>
\n She cut herself with a knife.<\/em><\/p>\n

In Spanish we use the following reflexive pronouns to express this:<\/p>\n

yo – me<\/strong>
\nt\u00fa – te<\/strong>
\n\u00e9l, ella, usted – se<\/strong>
\nnosotros – nos<\/strong>
\nvosotros – os<\/strong>
\nellos, ellas, ustedes – se<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yo me<\/strong> vi en el espejo. [I saw myself in the mirror.]<\/em>
\nT\u00fa te<\/strong> has duchado* muy temprano. [You took a shower very early.]<\/em>
\n\u00c9l se<\/strong> puso* una camiseta muy bonita. [He put on a very beautiful T-shirt.]<\/em>
\nNosotros nos<\/strong> contentamos* con eso. [We are content with that.]<\/em>
\nVosotros os<\/strong> hab\u00e9is cortado con un cuchillo. [You (plural) have cut yourselves with a knife.]<\/em>
\nEllas se<\/strong> compraron* muchas cosas. [They bought (fem.) themselves a lot of things.]<\/em><\/p>\n

*Some verbs are used in a reflexive form in Spanish, but not in English. Watch out for those!<\/p>\n

When we want to say we do things ourselves, without the help of somebody else, we use the following phrases:<\/p>\n

yo mismo<\/strong> – (by) myself
\nt\u00fa mismo<\/strong> – (by) yourself
\n\u00e9l mismo<\/strong> – (by) himself
\nella misma<\/strong> – (by) herself
\nusted mismo(a)<\/strong> – (by) yourself [formal]
\nnosotros(as) mismos(as)<\/strong> – (by) ourselves
\nvosotros(as) mismos(as)<\/strong> – (by) yourselves [plural]
\nellos mismos<\/strong> – (by) themselves [masc.]
\nellas mismas<\/strong> – (by) themselves [fem.]
\nustedes mismo(as)<\/strong> – (by) yourselves [formal – plural]<\/p>\n

Some examples:<\/p>\n

La torta la hice yo mismo<\/strong>. [I made the cake myself.]<\/em>
\nMe encanta que fuisto t\u00fa mismo<\/strong> quien la llam\u00f3. [I’m glad you were the one who called her.]<\/em>
\nTiene cuatro a\u00f1os y es una ni\u00f1a muy independiente. Se lava los dientes y se viste ella misma<\/strong>. [She’s four and she’s a very independent girl. She brushes her teeth and gets dressed by herself.]<\/em>
\nNosotros mismos<\/strong> limpiamos la casa. [We clean the house by ourselves.]<\/em><\/p>\n
