We don´t do “trick or treat” (well, actually young people are adopting this tradition), but we meet up with friends to toast chestnuts and share stories. One of my favorite is “The Spirit´s Mountain”, a legend written by Gustavo Adolfo Bequer, a Spanish romantic writer. It was first published in a newspaper, “El Contemporáneo”, in 1861. The author pretended to have heard the tale in Soria during All Eve´s Night, and not being able to sleep, he decided to write it down.

It tells the story of Alonso, the youngest son of Count Borges and his cousin Beatriz, a very proud young lady. One day, having a horse ride through the countryside, he told her the legend of a hill haunted by the spirits of some ancient Templar knights. When they returned home, she found that she had lost a blue sash in the mountain, and asked him to bring it back as a token of his love. He was reluctant to go to the mount because souls were told to wander the earth that night, but her insistence forced him to go and both of them had a creepy night…

What do you think happened with Alonso and Beatriz? I’m not telling you the end of the story, as you are going to listen to it in a wonderful radio broadcast (from minute 8 onwards). It is a great exercise to improve your listening skills in a thrilling way he he.
