Today we are going to practice making conditional sentences in Spanish.

Answers to all tasks involved in this lesson will be given at the end of the post and you can also follow a link with this post to watch the original theory video lesson on the same topic.

To go back and watch the original video lesson please follow this link:

Intermediate theory video lesson 28

1. First, let´s see if you can understand what these conditional sentences in Spanish mean:

Si quieres puedes venir con nosotros.
Mañana iré a la playa si hace buen tiempo.
Si tienes frío es mejor que te pongas un abrigo.
Si me levanto muy temprano, necesito tomarme un café.
No me gusta escuchar música si estoy leyendo.
Si estás aquí mañana, llámame.

2. Next, please complete the following conditional Spanish sentences as you wish:

Si hace mucho calor…
Si tuviera frío…
Si tienes hambre…
Si vinieras conmigo…
Si me escucharas…
Si hubieras venido conmigo…

3. Now, try to translate the following conditional sentences from English to Spanish:

If you were calmer, you would understand me.
If I practiced more, I would speak better in Spanish.
If I knew him, I would talk to him.
If we went to Spain, we would visit Antonio.
If we had a bigger house, we would be happier.
If you went to London, you should watch a musical.

4. Finally let´s practice transforming some sentences in the 3rd conditional starting with “Si…” to sentences starting with “De haber…”. For example, if I say “Si hubiera tenido tiempo, te habría llamado”, you should say “De haber tenido tiempo, te habría llamado”:

Si hubiera ido a la peluquería, mi pelo estaría mejor.
Si hubieras leído el libro, entenderías la película.
Si hubiéramos hecho lo que el profesor nos dijo, habríamos aprobado el examen.
Si hubiera visto a Ana, habría hablado con ella del tema.
Si hubiera pensado en eso, tendría la solución
Si hubiéramos visitado Roma, habríamos comido pizza.

Bueno, pues ya hemos terminado la clase de hoy.

Conditional sentences in Spanish require lots of practice. Try to make lots of your own sentences and write them down. Then, when you are in conversation and you want to use one of the three conditionals you will have the structures and uses much clearer in your head. If you are not sure, don´t worry. Make an attempt at the sentence anyway and check if it was correct afterwards. Practice makes perfect. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes.

¡Hasta pronto!

I hope you are enjoying my weekly interactive Spanish lessons.
