<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-7885" alt="falla arte" width="375" height="341" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/spanish/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2014/04/falla-arte-300x274.jpg">

Every year, the end of winter and the arrival of spring are celebrated in Valencia (Spain) with bonfires, fireworks, and colorful scenes in a festival known as Las Fallas. Falla means torch, but it is also the name given to the giant papier-mâché figures that decorate the city during this carnival like event. The Fallas are large cartoonish representation of satirical scenes and current events. But the big fallas are not the only figures that we can find: the ninots are smaller, dressed up in costumes doll-like ones that fill the city those days.

This festival dates back to the Middle Ages, when carpenters and artisans got rid of the pieces of wood they had stocked during winter by burning them during the spring equinox. Over time, this date was changed to make it coincide with the celebration of the patron saint of carpenters, Saint Joseph. Nowadays, the Fallas are both a cleaning before the new season starts and a satiric homage to Spain´s most recent social, cultural and historical events.

The starting signal for this festival is the Mascletá, a very noisy event where the different neighborhoods compete using fireworks and firecrackers. Falleras y falleros (people dressed with the traditional Valencian clothing) crowd the streets. There are dances outdoors, live music, flower offerings and a Cabalgata del Fuego (Fire Parade) before the final night and its most impressive moment: the Cremá (the Burning). <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-7886" alt="falla burn" width="300" height="199" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/spanish/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2014/04/falla-burn-300x199.jpg">During the Cremá, all the artistic ninots and fallas (except one, which is kept in the Museo Fallero as a symbol of prosperity) are destroyed in multiple bonfires.

Valencia becomes a city in flames… Can you imagine that?
