Spanish, however, has four ways of expressing cause and reason. Let\u2019s check them out.<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>por qu\u00e9<\/strong> \u2013 used in a direct or indirect question.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 no fuiste a la fiesta anoche? <\/em>(Why didn\u2019t you go to the party last night?)<br \/>\n<em>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 te r\u00edes? <\/em>(Why are you laughing?)<br \/>\n<em>No s\u00e9 por qu\u00e9 tiene tanta prisa.<\/em> (I don\u2019t know why he is in such a hurry.)<br \/>\n<em>Ella no sabe por qu\u00e9 su novio la dej\u00f3.<\/em> (She doesn\u2019t know why her boyfriend left her.)<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>por que<\/strong> \u2013 means \u201cby which\u201d, \u201cthrough which\u201d or \u201cbecause of which\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>Los problemas por que pas\u00e9 me hicieron crecer mucho. <\/em>(The problems which I went through made me grow a lot.)<br \/>\n<em>\u00c9sa es la carretera por que circulan muchos camiones.<\/em> (This is the road where many trucks go by.)<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>porque <\/strong>\u2013 because<\/p>\n<p><em>Me r\u00edo porque me has dicho algo muy chistoso.<\/em> (I\u2019m laughing because you told me something really funny.)<br \/>\n<em>Va al cine desp\u00faes de la medianoche porque le gusta.<\/em> (He goes to the movies after midnight because he likes it.)<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>porqu\u00e9 <\/strong>\u2013 is a noun and it means \u201cthe reason\u201d, \u201cthe motive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>No me dijo el porqu\u00e9 de su preocupaci\u00f3n. <\/em>(He didn\u2019t tell me the reason for his worries.)<br \/>\n<em>Est\u00e1n averiguando el porqu\u00e9 del tr\u00e1gico accidente.<\/em> (They\u2019re checking the reason for that tragic accident.)<\/p>\n<p>Nos vemos prontito.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In English we use why and because to ask for and give reasons for something.
