<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8251" alt="keep-calm1" width="257" height="300" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/spanish/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2014/08/keep-calm1-257x300.png">

Esta tarde he imprimido una copia de cada uno de mis posts (I have printed a copy of each one of my posts this afternoon). Or is it “He impreso una copia de cada uno de mis posts”? Have you ever had this dilemma? Today, we are going to see where it comes from.

As you already know, the past participle it is a non-personal form of the verb, which works as a verb in the compound tenses and the passive voice, but can also act as an adjective. When the participle form is regular, the same word is used in both cases. However, some verbs possess a double participle, a regular and an irregular form, and this can be misleading.

Nowadays, there are only three verbs with two forms in the past participle: imprimir (to print), where imprimido would be the regular form, and impreso the irregular one; freír (to fry), where freído would be regular, (though it is almost in disuse) and frito would be the irregular one; and finally proveer (to provide), with proveído as regular form, and provisto as irregular. Both forms are correct, though depending on the zone its use will differ.

IMPRIMIR (PRINT) (imprimido/impreso)

As verb: both options can be used.
As adjective: the irregular form is more frequently used.

FREIR (TO FRY) (freído/frito)

As verb: both forms can be used, though it is more frequent the irregular form “frito“.
As adjective: only the irregular form “frito” is used.

PROVEER (TO PROVIDE) (proveído/provisto)

As verb: both forms can be used.
As adjective: both forms can be used, but “provisto” is most common.

Until recently, some adjectives with Latin roots were considered to be participles so this lists was much longer, as you can see with the examples you will find above. The irregular form only functions as adjective, with the exception of the three verbs mentioned before, and in the cases in which the regular form does not exist or is in disuse, as is the case of “rompido“:

Infinitivo

Participio irregular- Uso adjetivo

Participio regular

abrir

abierto

absolver

absuelto

atender

atento

atendido

bendecir

bendito

bendecido

cincuncidar

circunciso

circuncidado

concluir

concluso

concluido

confesar

confeso

confesado

confundir

confuso

confundido

convertir

converso

convertido

corromper

corrupto

corrompido

cubrir

cubierto

decir

dicho

despertar

despierto

despertado

elegir

electo

elegido

escribir

escrito

expeditar

expedito

expeditado

expresar

expreso

expresado

eximir

exento

eximido

freír

frito

freído

hartar

harto

hartado

imprimir

impreso

imprimido

incluir

incluso

incluido

incurrir

incurso

incurrido

insertar

inserto

insertado

maldecir

maldito

maldecido

manifestar

manifesto

manifestado

morir

muerto

nacer

nato

nacido

omitir

omiso

omitido

poner

puesto

poseer

poseso

poseído

prender

preso

prendido

presumir

presunto

presumido

propender

propenso

propendido

proveer

provisto

proveído

romper

roto

rompido (uso arcaico)

salvar

salvo

salvado

sepultar

sepulto

sepultado

soltar

suelto

soltado

sujetar

sujeto

sujetado

suspender

suspenso

suspendido

teñir

tinto

teñido

torcer

tuerto

torcido

ver

visto

volver

vuelto

Esta tarde he imprimido una copia de cada uno de mis posts. ¿O se dice “He impreso una copia de cada uno de mis posts”? ¿Alguna vez se os ha presentado este dilema?
