Let&#8217;s take for example the verb \u201cto take\u201d. If we look it up in an English-Spanish dictionary, dozens of entries will crop up and if we\u00b4re not very familiar with the language yet we won\u00b4t know what to choose, right? Right! So, learning fixed phrases is the way to go, people! Let\u00b4s check out some expressions with the verb \u201cto take\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>1. <strong>tomar <\/strong>&#8211; <em>Tom\u00f3 el cuaderno y fue a estudiar.<\/em> <\/span><span>(He took the notebook and went to study.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>2. <strong>llevar <\/strong>&#8211; <em>Le llevo el libro a mi hermana.<\/em> \u2013 (I&#8217;m taking the book to my sister.) \/ <em>Llev\u00f3 a su esposa al aeropuerto.<\/em> <\/span><span>(He took his wife to the airport.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>3. <strong>coger <\/strong>&#8211; <em>Cogieron las maletas en el hotel.<\/em> <\/span><span>(They took the luggage in the hotel.). NB: The verb <strong>coger <\/strong>also has a sexual connotation in some Latin American countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>4. <strong>arrebatar <\/strong>&#8211; <em>\u00bfTe arrebat\u00f3 el sombrero?<\/em> <\/span><span>(Did he take your hat?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>5. <strong>robar, quitar <\/strong>&#8211; <em>A Laura le robaron mucho dinero.<\/em> <\/span><span>(They took a lot of money from Laura.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>6. <strong>aceptar <\/strong>\u2013 <em>No quisieron aceptar su cheque. <\/em><\/span><span>(They didn&#8217;t want to take her check.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>7. <strong>coger, tomar, ir en<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Tomar\u00e9 un taxi.<\/em> <\/span><span>(I will take a taxi.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>8. <strong>necesitar, requerir, hacer falta<\/strong> &#8211; Hace falta mucho coraje para hacer eso. <\/span><span>(It takes a lot of courage to do that.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>10. <strong>durar <\/strong>&#8211; <em>La pel\u00edcula no durar\u00e1 mucho.<\/em> <\/span><span>(The movie won&#8217;t take long.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>11. <strong>estudiar <\/strong>&#8211; <em>Estudio psicolog\u00eda.<\/em> <\/span><span>(I&#8217;m taking psychology.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>12. <strong>to take a bath (shower)<\/strong> &#8211; <em>ba\u00f1arse (ducharse)<\/em> &#8211; <em>Los hijos de Mar\u00eda siempre se ba\u00f1an en la tarde.<\/em> <\/span><span>(Mar\u00eda&#8217;s children always take a shower in the afternoon.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>13. <strong>to take a break, to take a rest <\/strong>&#8211; <em>tomarse un descanso, descansar &#8211; Vamos a tomarnos un descanso a las tres.<\/em> <\/span><span>(We&#8217;re going to take a break at 3.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>14. <strong>to take after<\/strong> \u2013 1. perseguir &#8211; <em>El polic\u00eda persigui\u00f3 el ladr\u00f3n.<\/em> <\/span><span>(The policeman took after the thief.) 2. parecerse \u2013<em> Juan se parece a su pap\u00e1<\/em>. <\/span><span>(Juan takes after his dad.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>15.<strong> to take apart<\/strong> &#8211; desmontar &#8211; <em>Desmont\u00f3 el equipo de sonido.<\/em> <\/span><span>(He took the stereo apart.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whenever I teach my students vocabulary, I always tell them to take notes using real and meaningful examples and to learn fixed expressions.
