They belong to a song by The Beatles, “Strawberry Fields Forever”. John Lennon wrote this song during the filming of How I won the war, in Almeria (Spain). And part of it, “Living is easy with eyes closed “ translated into Spanish as “Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados”, was chosen as title for David Trueba’s last film. His particular road movie is the Spanish Oscar contender ‎in the best foreign-language film category at the 87th Academy Awards.

The film is based on the true story of Juan Carrión, an English teacher at the University of Cartagena during the 60s. Carrión was a pioneer in using songs to improve his students listening and comprehension in a foreign language. As he loved music and was a beatlemaniac, he used the Liverpool group songs as teaching material in his lessons. The problem was that he had to listen to the songs on the radio and transcript the lyrics himself, and there were some words he couldn’t catch. So, after getting to know that John Lenon was coming to Almería, Juan took a bus and went to meet him, explained his method and asked John to fill in the gaps in his transcriptions. The Beatle was fascinated by this particular teaching system, so he promised to include the lyrics in their records from that moment on. And so they did…

This touching anecdote was the seed that inspired the movie that won six Goya Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Writing and Best Leading Actor (Javier Cámara). Javier Cámara plays the role of Antonio, an English teacher and a Beatles’ fan (the character inspired by Juan Carrión) who in his trip to Almeria to meet his idol picks up two hitchhikers: Juanjo, a sixteen years old boy who has run away from home, and Belén, a young woman who also seems to be eluding someone. Together, they will try to achieve their own dreams, and get freedom, if that is possible…

Now that Christmas is coming and you´ll have some free time, it would be a good exercise to improve your Spanish to watch “Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados”, don´t you think?
