Början pa allt, “The Start of it All” is the title track of the 2013 album by Swedish hip-hop artist Petter. It also happens to be a really great New Year’s song. So, for today’s blog, I’ll dissect this song a little bit and have you do some listening. If hip-hop is not your favorite, don’t worry, I’ve picked a really approachable song from one of Sweden’s most popular artists. Also a bonus, the music video was filmed with preschoolers and it’s adorable. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this.

To start something new is a nice feeling. Något nytt, or “nåt nytt,” as you’ll hear in the song’s intro means “something new” in English. This song is all about putting life’s stresses aside and enjoying that “new day feeling.” Whether you’re in over your head at work, or have a New Year’s Eve hangover, never fear, it’s a new day! 

So who’s Petter? In short, an award-winning rapper that’s been on the scene for the last 20 years. He’s collaborated with the biggest names in Swedish music and is an essential figure to know in modern Swedish music. Petter is a long-time friend of rapper Eye N’ I, another Stockholm rapper, with whom he collaborated on this song.

My biggest tip for listening to any song in your target language is to repeat, repeat, and repeat. Listen for patterns, rhyming, and rhythm of the text. For this song, I recommend a couple of steps:

1. Fill-in the blanks in the first verse. Use your rhyming knowledge to help you with the missing words.
2. Sing along to the chorus. I’ve translated it below and it’s quite repetitive so give it your best shot!
3. After the song is over, read my notes on some of the playful language you may have missed.
4. Lyssna igen! Listen again!

Enjoy it?! Let’s dissect some of the text a bit further. According to the rappers they were feeling so good they could: 

se klart för första gången                  see clearly for the first time

checka ut från ett illusionshotell      check out from an illusion hotel

jag rakt igenom kaklet                         go straight through a wall

klyver atomer                                         split atoms

“Så Gråben jagar Hjulben, bip bip bip bip / För jag sprungit runt i cirkeln.”
The “bip, bip bip” is a reference to the famous Looney Tunes figure Roadrunner, or Hjulben, and Gråben is Wile E. Coyote. That line translates to, “Like the Coyote chases the Roadrunner, I’ve been running around in circles.”

“För jag är hyper, jag är aktiv / Jag är rakt igenom kaklet med ett fuck driv.”    Two interesting points here; first, Petter was diagnosed with ADHD in 2012 and it’s been something he’s rapped about a bit since. “I’m hyper, I’m active. I go straight through the wall with a “f***” drive.” Second, Swedes really like to use the f-word, in music and in speech. It’s always surprising to hear how they throw it around pretty casually. I’ve had to tell Swedish friends that it’s actually a bit stronger in English than they realize.
