On Friday, June 11th<\/sup>, South Africa played to a 1-1 tie against Mexico in the opening game of the 2010 World Cup.\u00a0 Sweden has not played, nor will they.\u00a0 The Swedish national team missed the World Cup for the first time since 1996.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t matter. Swedes everywhere are still paying close attention to the World Cup. \u00a0Despite having been here for over three years, I just can\u2019t manage to get into soccer (as we Americans tend to call it).\u00a0 I\u2019ve tried.\u00a0 I\u2019ve watched games on TV. \u00a0I\u2019ve gone to a Swedish league game.\u00a0 I\u2019ve gone to a Swedish national team game. \u00a0I\u2019ve discussed the game with friends and family.\u00a0 I know the rules, I understand the passing angles and the degree of difficulty and athleticism.\u00a0 It just doesn\u2019t do it for me.\u00a0 I\u2019ve accepted that.\u00a0 Kind of.<\/p>\n

Because every time there is a big game, every time there is a World Cup game, I try again. I sit myself down in front of the TV and watch.\u00a0 It hasn\u2019t worked yet, but I have my moments of interest.\u00a0 Like when England let that American goal sneak in.\u00a0 But those moments are few and far between.\u00a0 At least for now.<\/p>\n

Luckily though, the international community in Stockholm, as well as all of the Swedish football fans (see? I\u2019m learning. It\u2019s football, not soccer.) make the World Cup quite an experience.\u00a0 Sports bars are packed with the ex-pat community cheering on their home countries, goals result in cheers, wins result in honking cars.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great atmosphere.\u00a0 If you find yourself in the country, be sure to pop in and experience a game.\u00a0 But before you go, make sure you take the time to learn some of the vocab that will get you through the game:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
