Yet, I am staying home, because <strong>jag \u00e4r f\u00f6rkyld<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I have a nasty cold, and so there\u2019s no partying for me. I will stay at home, watch TV, and then watch fireworks, which they normally tend to fire in the playground right behind my house. I can watch the show from the comfort of my bedroom window. I will also do some designated driving for my friends in the wee hours of the morning.<\/p>\n<p>But before you too disappear into your <strong>Systembolaget<\/strong>-fueled New Year\u2019s eve madness, take a look at these two examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ny\u00e5rsafton<\/strong> (<em>def.<\/em> <strong>\u2013aftonen<\/strong>, <em>pl.<\/em> <strong>\u2013aftnar<\/strong>, <em>def. pl.<\/em> <strong>\u2013aftnarna<\/strong>) \u2013 <strong>\u00e5rets sista dag<\/strong> \u2013 New Year\u2019s Eve, 31 December<\/li>\n<li><strong>ny\u00e5rsdagen<\/strong> (<em>pl.<\/em> &#8211;<strong>dagar<\/strong>, <em>def. pl.<\/em> <strong>-dagarna<\/strong>) &#8211; <strong>\u00e5rets f\u00f6rsta dag<\/strong> \u2013 New Year\u2019s Day \u2013 1 January<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See anything odd about this second word? No? Look again.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t say \u201cny\u00e5rsdag\u201d but \u201c<strong>ny\u00e5rsdagen<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 this word exists in singular <strong>only in the definite form<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s probably the limit of our intellectual effort for today.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, if you\u2019re going to party hard \u2013 have someone else do the driving afterwards, or call a cab. It may cost an arm and a leg tonight, that\u2019s for sure, but it\u2019s better to start the year in one piece, safe and sound.
