{"id":1495,"date":"2010-07-14T17:46:08","date_gmt":"2010-07-14T17:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/?p=1495"},"modified":"2010-07-14T17:46:08","modified_gmt":"2010-07-14T17:46:08","slug":"nudity-and-violence-in-sweden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/nudity-and-violence-in-sweden\/","title":{"rendered":"Nudity and Violence in Sweden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rick Steves recently wrote an article about nudity in Europe and the normal American reaction to that nudity.\u00a0 Titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/TRAVEL\/07\/13\/european.nudes\/\">European nudes and American prudes<\/a> (cute huh?) it was published over at CNN.com for those of you interested.<\/p>\n<p>The article claims that Europeans are much more comfortable with nudity than Americans.\u00a0 Something that I agree with based solely on my own experiences and no actual research whatsoever.\u00a0 For most people who have ever traveled to Europe though, this comes as no revelation.\u00a0 But it brings up an interesting point, one that doesn\u2019t have so much to do with nudity as it does with cultural values.<\/p>\n<p>In the US nudity is akin to sacrilege.\u00a0 The now infamous nipple slip by Janet Jackson a few years back resulted in nearly half a million dollars in fines and a crackdown on nudity or anything remotely sexual on TV.\u00a0 For a nipple.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, moving to Sweden put that in stark contrast.\u00a0 Suddenly movies played on TV weren\u2019t editing out the nudity.\u00a0 News programs weren\u2019t blurring out the nudity.\u00a0 Newspapers were printing nude pictures when they were newsworthy.\u00a0 It was kind of refreshing to be perfectly honest.\u00a0 It\u2019s just a nipple.\u00a0 We\u2019ve all got them.<\/p>\n<p>Then I started noticing that while nudity wasn\u2019t being edited out, other things were.\u00a0 Most notably blood and violence.\u00a0 Especially in those movies playing on TV.\u00a0 It was a strange thing to notice, I know, but it pointed out one of those simple things everyone talks about when going abroad.\u00a0 The cultural values of a country.<\/p>\n<p>For better or worse, the US has decided that we need less nudity in our everyday lives.\u00a0 For better or worse, Sweden has decided that we need less violent images in our everyday lives.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that Swedes are running around naked on the streets or that Americans are running around displaying blood and guts on every street corner.\u00a0 It does mean though that those cultural values play a role (sometimes blatant, sometimes imperceptible) in our everyday lives as we cross cultures.<\/p>\n<p>As you go between your home culture and Sweden, what has struck you as being valued abroad more than at home?\u00a0 Or vice versa?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rick Steves recently wrote an article about nudity in Europe and the normal American reaction to that nudity.\u00a0 Titled European nudes and American prudes (cute huh?) it was published over at CNN.com for those of you interested.
