I have not responded right away, simply because I was thinking about what the proper answer should be.<\/p>\n<p>You see, there are as many ways to properly pronounce Swedish as there are regions in Sweden. People in <strong>Sk\u00e5ne<\/strong> say things their way, people in <strong>J\u00e4mtland<\/strong> say things their way and people on the border with Finland say things in a way that\u2026 oh well, I\u2019m not even going there \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>My hairdresser is from <strong>J\u00e4mtland<\/strong> and her accent is so thick you could slice bread with it. I have seen and heard her switching between Swedish and English when other Swedish customers can&#8217;t understand her.<\/p>\n<p>There is such an animal as <strong>rikssvenska<\/strong> (<strong>rikssvenska eller standardsvenska \u00e4r det svenska standardspr\u00e5ket som talas i Sverige<\/strong>), and people do learn it in school, but what they learn and how they actually speak in daily life are two different things.<br \/>\nYou see it even on TV. There is no one standard accent \u2013 different presenters and newscasters say things their way.<\/p>\n<p>But compared to other languages (like English, for example) Swedish is pronounced pretty much the way it\u2019s written.<\/p>\n<p>There are certain rules and if you follow them, chances are people will understand you.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, the letter combinations that give Swedish learners the most trouble are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>sj<\/strong> \u2013 pronounced in as many ways as there are regions in Sweden (good examples are: <strong>sju<\/strong>, or <strong>sjuk<\/strong>, or the superhard &#8211; <strong>sjuksk\u00f6terska<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>kj, ke, ki, k\u00f6<\/strong> \u2013 these combinations can be tricky as well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>rs<\/strong> \u2013 this one can be confusing, because it not only applies when there is \u201crs\u201d in the middle of a word, but also when one word ends in \u201cr\u201d and the next one begins with \u201cs\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago, I think it was Daniel, who mentioned that he would like to know how Swedish should be pronounced.
