{"id":1564,"date":"2010-07-23T15:26:58","date_gmt":"2010-07-23T15:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/?p=1564"},"modified":"2010-07-23T15:26:58","modified_gmt":"2010-07-23T15:26:58","slug":"more-nudity-in-sweden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/more-nudity-in-sweden\/","title":{"rendered":"More Nudity in Sweden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocal.se\/\">TheLocal.se<\/a> is a news site in Sweden that focuses on bringing Swedish news to people in English.\u00a0 It is not always a bastion of investigative journalism, but it can be entertaining and gives a quick overview of the important things happening in Sweden.\u00a0 It also gives a quick overview of the ridiculous things.<\/p>\n<p>Considering my recent post on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/nudity-and-violence-in-sweden\/\">nudity and violence in Sweden<\/a>, I felt it necessary, in the spirit of full disclosure, to point out that a new study has been conducted on nudity in Sweden.\u00a0 More specifically, toplessness at beaches.<\/p>\n<p>In a stunning article titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocal.se\/27940\/20100722\/\">Swedish Women Vote to Keep Their Tops On<\/a>, it seems that 99% of German women are in favor of topless sunbathing whereas only 84% of Swedish women are.\u00a0 Clearly, the women of Sweden are flaunting their modesty rather than their nudity.\u00a0 Or something like that.<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t taken any sort of statistics course in about six or seven years, and don\u2019t especially plan to, but 84% of people being in favor of something seems like a clear majority to me.\u00a0 So the title of the article may be a bit misleading. Both to the women who are concerned about going topless, and to the men who are also concerned about women going topless.\u00a0 But it does bring us back to those cultural norms.\u00a0 While Americans might see the Swedes as immodest when it comes to nudity, Germans might view the Swedes as prudes.<\/p>\n<p>I am fascinated by the cultural ideals of a country and how they vary.\u00a0 Not just between countries that find themselves an ocean apart, but countries that have a long and sordid history together with centuries of close ties.\u00a0 Like Germany and Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>I am fascinated how stereotypes can take over an identity, like the Swedish stereotype of open sexuality and nudity, while other countries usually associated with a stoic and staid lifestyle, like Germany, can view themselves as more open in the discussion of nudity.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s why I travel.
