Everything was going just fine and we were happily cruising along when somewhere between <strong>Ume\u00e5<\/strong> and <strong>\u00d6rnsk\u00f6ldsvik<\/strong> (also known as <strong>\u00d6-vik<\/strong>) the weather got all funky. It began to snow, or rather, from the looks of the road, it had been snowing for quite some time. I saw the familiar yellow <strong>Ybuss<\/strong> heading towards <strong>Ume\u00e5<\/strong> and realized it was about an hour late. That could only mean one thing \u2013 the road conditions ahead were even worse. And they were. By the time we got to <strong>H\u00e4rn\u00f6sand<\/strong>, my hands were stiff from hanging on to the steering wheel for dear life. It did eventually get better after <strong>Sundsvall<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2009\/03\/nils.jpg\" aria-label=\"Nils\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-177\"  alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"159\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2009\/03\/nils.jpg\"><\/a><span>But all that bad weather made me think about <strong>Nils<\/strong> and his goose. <em>(Why <strong>Nils<\/strong>? If I remember correctly, he had also started his journey in March.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Oh how I wished for a goose to spirit me away high above the snowy countryside. Or at the very least \u2013 for a goose who could drive in the snow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>You know about <strong>Nils<\/strong> and his story, right? But do you know that the story is immortalized on the 20 <strong>krona<\/strong> bill? I am ashamed to admit that I never paid much attention to what\u2019s on my money apart from the obvious \u2013 the denomination and what it could buy. To me, <strong>tjugo kronor<\/strong> simply meant two cartons of milk. Yeah, I knew it had pretty pictures on it, but who holds on to the money long enough to examine the graphics? Not me, as it turned out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>And that\u2019s how it was until a few years ago when a French friend pointed out the goose. And since when a French person talks about geese that always makes me think about <em>foie gras<\/em>, so it took me a few seconds to realize that this was about <strong>Selma Lagerl\u00f6f<\/strong>\u2019s story. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2009\/03\/selma.jpg\" aria-label=\"Selma\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-178\"  alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"198\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2009\/03\/selma.jpg\"><\/a><span><strong>Selma<\/strong> <\/span><span><strong>Lagerl\u00f6f <\/strong><\/span><span>(1858 \u2013 1940) is the stern-looking lady on the other side of the 20 <strong>krona<\/strong> bill. Her claim to fame was that she was the first woman to win the <strong>Nobel<\/strong> Prize in Literature for <em>\u201cthe appreciation of the lofty idealism, vivid imagination and spiritual perception that characterize her writings.\u201d <\/em>That was back in 1909. But when World War II began, she sent her <strong>Nobel<\/strong> Prize medal <em>(though why not the money, huh?)<\/em> and her gold medal from the Swedish Academy (the body that awards the <strong>Nobel<\/strong> Prize) to the government of Finland to help them raise money to fight the Soviet Union. The Finns were so moved by this gesture that they managed to raise all the money by themselves and returned the medals to <strong>Selma<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>What else? The lady\u2019s old home in <strong>M\u00e5rbacka<\/strong> is now a museum. I haven\u2019t been there yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>But of course, she is most known for the book about the little fella flying on a goose across all of Sweden. Well, nearly all of Sweden, as it happens, because he skips a province. The book is of course \u201c<strong>Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige<\/strong>\u201d, which was kind of awkwardly translated into English as <em>\u201cThe Wonderful Adventures of Nils\u201d<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>I have read the book, and sadly I must say, I\u2019m not a huge fan. Maybe it\u2019s because it was the first book ever that I read in Swedish. I much preferred the anime version <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0296386\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cNirusu no Fushigi na Tabi.\u201d<\/a><\/em> So much, in fact, that I even own the DVD box set of the animated series.
