How English is English?<\/p>\n<p>Well, it depends on what we consider as a loan word in\u00a0one language. Can ancient\u00a0Latin and Greek heritage\u00a0called loan?\u00a0\u00a0Loan words\u00a0have always been\u00a0there all through the centuries. Some of the loans stayed some of them did\u00a0not in our language. And some of them has been outranked by words from a third language. The reasons can be very different 1.\u00a0geographical reason\u00a0for example; neighboring cultures influence each other, 2. conquest or colonization or 3.\u00a0lack of expressions within a certain domain etc.<\/p>\n<p>Latin: <strong>sektor<\/strong> because it is a part of a whole. e<em>ng. sector.<\/em>\u00a0Other words like:<strong> tur<\/strong>, <strong>procent<\/strong>, <strong>dividera<\/strong>,<strong> internationell<\/strong>,<strong> unik<\/strong>, <strong>uniform<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Franska: <strong>finans<\/strong> which originally<strong> <\/strong>means <em>to<\/em> <em>end, close, terminate<\/em>. Other words like: <strong>balkong<\/strong>, <strong>assiett<\/strong>, <strong>cigarr\/cigarett\/cigarill<\/strong>,<strong> parti<\/strong>, <strong>diskutera<\/strong>,<strong> chef<\/strong>, <strong>journalist<\/strong>, <strong>precis<\/strong>,<strong> paraply<\/strong>, <strong>trottoar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tyska: <strong>motsats<\/strong>,<strong> genomsnitt<\/strong> eng. <em>opposite, avarage<\/em> which are direct translations from German. Other words like: <strong>egentligen<\/strong><em>,<\/em> <strong>offentlig<\/strong> and words with er- and be- prefixes<em> like: <\/em><strong>ers\u00e4tta<\/strong><em>, <\/em><strong>bes\u00f6ka<\/strong> etc.<\/p>\n<p>Turkiska: <strong>kalabalik<\/strong> which means crowd <em>eng.\u00a0uproar<\/em>, <strong>kiosk<\/strong>, <strong>k\u00e5ldolma<\/strong>,<strong> guzz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ungerska: <strong>husar<\/strong> which originally means a type of cavalary\/horseback rider. eng. <strong>hussar<\/strong>. Other words like:\u00a0<strong>rubikkub<\/strong>, <strong>paprika<\/strong>, <strong>hejduk<\/strong>, <strong>dolman<\/strong>, <strong>gulasch<\/strong>, <strong>tschak\u00e5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finska: <strong>pojke<\/strong> which is a direct loan\u00a0of Finnish poika. eng. boy Other words<em>: <\/em><strong>k\u00e4ngor<\/strong>, <strong>hyvens<\/strong>, <strong>kola (d\u00f6)<\/strong> for example in the expression <em>kola vippen<\/em>, <strong>rappakalja<\/strong>, <strong>memma<\/strong>, <strong>sisu<\/strong>, <strong>Molotovcocktail<\/strong>, <strong>pulka<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Romani:<strong> tjej\u00a0<\/strong>is a synonym for\u00a0flicka in romani. eng girl. Other words like:\u00a0<strong>jycke(hund)<\/strong>,<strong> lattjo(roligt)<\/strong>,<strong> haja (f\u00f6rst\u00e5)<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0pr\u00f6jsa (betala)<\/strong>,<strong> vischan (landsbyggden)<\/strong>, <strong>macka (sm\u00f6rg\u00e5s)<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Engelska: <strong>telefon<\/strong>,<strong> television<\/strong>, <strong>backlash<\/strong>, <strong>internet<\/strong>, <strong>pop<\/strong>, <strong>\u00e4rke<\/strong>, <strong>\u00e4ngel<\/strong>, <strong>dj\u00e4vul<\/strong>, <strong>pr\u00e4st<\/strong>,<strong> tunnel<\/strong>, <strong>match<\/strong>, <strong>tr\u00e4na<\/strong>, <strong>export-import<\/strong>, <strong>mixer<\/strong>, <strong>hj\u00e4rntv\u00e4tt<\/strong>, <strong>email<\/strong>, <strong>fax<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p>*note that some of the words are from Greek or Latin but English was the one that internationalized them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swedish words in English:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In English: lingonberry (lingonb\u00e4r), window (vind\u00f6ga), smorgasbord (sm\u00f6rg\u00e5sbord), crisp bread (kn\u00e4ckebr\u00f6d), orienteering (orientering), tungsten (tungsten), ombudsman\/representative (ombudsman)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How Swedish is Swedish?
