{"id":2841,"date":"2011-01-24T23:24:53","date_gmt":"2011-01-24T23:24:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/?p=2841"},"modified":"2011-01-24T23:24:53","modified_gmt":"2011-01-24T23:24:53","slug":"preteritum-%e2%80%93-the-swedish-past-tense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/preteritum-%e2%80%93-the-swedish-past-tense\/","title":{"rendered":"Preteritum \u2013 the Swedish Past Tense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve learned all kinds of different tenses here at Transparent, along with different verb forms.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s time to learn how to say learned.\u00a0 It\u2019s time for the past tense.<\/p>\n<p>Since we already know how to put a verb into the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/fun-with-swedish-grammar-%e2%80%93-imperative\/\">imperative<\/a>, creating the past tense, or preteritum, is no problem at all.\u00a0 Especially with the help of a few handy rules.\u00a0 Keep in mind, there are exceptions, and we\u2019ll list a few below, but in general these will act as a guide.<\/p>\n<p>For imperatives that end in a vowel, we just need to add a \u2013de.<\/p>\n<p>Imperativ + -de = Preteritum<br \/>\nSluta &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Slutade<br \/>\nKrama &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Kramade<br \/>\nStanna &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Stannade<\/p>\n<p>We actually do the exact same thing for verbs that end in (most consonants) in the imperative form as well.\u00a0 For example:<\/p>\n<p>Imperativ + -de = Preteritum<br \/>\nRing &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Ringde<br \/>\nK\u00e4nn &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; K\u00e4nnde<br \/>\nF\u00f6lj &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; F\u00f6ljde<\/p>\n<p>However, we do have a few that deviate slightly. \u00a0If the imperative ends in a k, p, s, or t, We will add a \u2013te instead of a \u2013de.<\/p>\n<p>Imperativ + -te = Preteritum<br \/>\n(-er verb som slutar i k, p, s, och t)<br \/>\nT\u00e4nk &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; T\u00e4nkte<br \/>\nK\u00f6p &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; K\u00f6pte<br \/>\nL\u00e4s &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; L\u00e4ste<br \/>\nByt &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Bytte<\/p>\n<p>And then there are our short verbs. \u00a0These always tend to be a little bit different.\u00a0 Here we are going to add \u2013dde.\u00a0 For example:<\/p>\n<p>Imperativ + -dde = Preteritum<br \/>\nKorta verb:<br \/>\nTro &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Trodde<br \/>\nBo &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Bodde<br \/>\nKl\u00e4 &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Kl\u00e4dde<\/p>\n<p>And finally, our exceptions.\u00a0 These include our strong verbs, just like in English, some verbs in Swedish are considered strong verbs. \u00a0Like the verb to drink.<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions:<br \/>\nStarka verb och oregelbundna verb:<br \/>\nSkriv &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Skrev<br \/>\nDrick &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Drack<br \/>\nVar &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Var<br \/>\nG\u00f6r &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Gjorde<br \/>\nHa &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;&gt; Hade<\/p>\n<p>With all that in mind (and there is plenty to keep in mind) good luck!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve learned all kinds of different tenses here at Transparent, along with different verb forms.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s time to learn how to say learned.\u00a0 It\u2019s time for the past tense.
