But they can be tricky and it\u00a0is quite easy to become Swenglish when there&#8217;s an abbreviation involved.\u00a0So, let&#8217;s get this over with, shall we?\u00a0Useful Swedish abbreviations and\u00a0where you would see\u00a0them:<\/p>\n<p><strong>ank. = ankommande = arrival, arriving<\/strong><br \/>\nAnk. t\u00e5g fr\u00e5n Stockholm<br \/>\nTrain arriving from Stockholm<\/p>\n<p><strong>avd. = avdelning = department<\/strong><br \/>\nAvd. f\u00f6r geologi<br \/>\nThe geological department<\/p>\n<p><strong>avg. = avg\u00e5ende = departure, departing<\/strong><br \/>\nAvg. t\u00e5g fr\u00e5n Stockholm<br \/>\nTrain departing from Stockholm<\/p>\n<p><strong>ca. = cirka = approximately<\/strong><br \/>\n(<em>OBS\/Attention! The Swedish cirka differs from the English circa and is used when talking about anything approximately\/roughly, not only in connection to dates.)<\/em><br \/>\nDet var ca. 100 personer i publiken<br \/>\nThere were approx. 100 people in the audience<\/p>\n<p><strong>d.v.s. = det vill s\u00e4ga = i.e<\/strong><br \/>\nVi \u00e5kte till huvudstaden, d.v.s. Stockholm<br \/>\nWe went to the capital city, i.e. Stockholm<\/p>\n<p><strong>e.m. = eftermiddag = (in the) afternoon <\/strong><br \/>\nVi ses i e.m<br \/>\nSee you in the afternoon<\/p>\n<p><strong>f.m. = f\u00f6rmiddag = (in the) morning<\/strong><br \/>\nM\u00f6tet\u00a0\u00e4r i morgon\u00a0f.m.<br \/>\nThe meeting is tomorrow morning<\/p>\n<p><strong>fr.o.m. = fr\u00e5n och med <\/strong><strong>= as of<\/strong><br \/>\nVi tar lov fr.o.m. onsdag<br \/>\nWe will be on holiday as of Wednesday<\/p>\n<p><strong>m.m. = med mera =\u00a0 a Swedish form of etc.\u00a0meaning &#8220;and more&#8221;.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>(OBS!Attention! <\/em><em>Swedes also use <strong>o.s.v.<\/strong> meaning <strong>and so on\/e.t.c<\/strong>)<\/em><br \/>\nJag \u00e4lskar hundar, katter, h\u00e4star m.m.<br \/>\nI love dogs, cats, horses etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>p.g.a. = p\u00e5 grund av = because of\/due to<\/strong><br \/>\nTerrassen \u00e4r st\u00e4ngd p.g.a. regn<br \/>\nThe trerrace is closed due to rain<\/p>\n<p><strong>t.o.m = till och med = up until and including<\/strong><br \/>\nJag l\u00e4ste t.o.m sidan 37<br \/>\nI read up until and including page 37<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nMore commonly used abbreviations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>inv. = inv\u00e5nade = inhabitants<br \/>\nkl. = klockan = o&#8217;clock<br \/>\nkr. = krona\/kronor = crown\/crowns<br \/>\nOBS! = Observera! = Attention!<br \/>\no.s.v. = och s\u00e5 vidare = etc.<br \/>\nst. = styck = piece<br \/>\nt. ex. = till exempel = for example<br \/>\nt.h. = till h\u00f6ger = to the right<br \/>\nt.v. = till v\u00e4nster <em>or<\/em> tills vidare = to the left <em>or<\/em> until further notice<br \/>\ntr. = trappa\/trappor = stairs\/floor<br \/>\nv.g. = var god = please (formal)<\/p>\n<p>Still here?
