Or so it would seem, especially if you\u2019re keeping tabs on us here at Transparent.\u00a0 We\u2019ve written about <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/celebrating-fat-tuesday-swedish-style\/\">Semlor<\/a> and just the other day we got a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/enjoy-your-weekend-with-great-swedish-cakes\/\">lovely recipe for some \u00e4pplekaka<\/a>.\u00a0 Neither of which I have dared tried making on my own.\u00a0 But it gets better, because this Friday is v\u00e5ffeldagen.\u00a0 Waffle day!<\/p>\n<p>I am not a linguist, nor a baker for that matter, but apparently v\u00e5ffeldagen is one of those linguistic evolutions from v\u00e5rfrudagen.\u00a0 V\u00e5rfru is of course, Our Lady \u2013 the Virgin Mary.\u00a0 I suppose it isn\u2019t too hard to see how v\u00e5rfru becomes v\u00e5ffel.\u00a0 Of course, what I\u2019ve done there can best be described as an elementary form of folk linguistics. I\u2019ll leave the research up to you guys.<\/p>\n<p>What seems to have happened then is that a once religious holiday has become, well, less religious to say the least.\u00a0 One might argue this has something to do with the secular nature of the country.\u00a0 Others might just argue that waffles are delicious.\u00a0 And as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/signs-of-springvartecken\/\">spring<\/a> meets several starts and stops filled with snow on its way to Sweden, it\u2019s not a bad idea to take some time to enjoy a waffle.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not going to give you a recipe for waffles I\u2019m afraid, it\u2019d be a little bit like your vegetarian friend telling you to try the alligator tongue wrapped in bacon. Maybe not the best person to be taking meat eating advice from, although bacon is delicious. But just like your friend, I am not the best person to be taking baking advice from.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the history and linguistics behind the movement, or the recipe used, people throughout Sweden will be enjoying v\u00e5ffeldagen.\u00a0 Even some Swedish-Americans will be celebrating their heritage by celebrating v\u00e5ffeldagen in the US.\u00a0 Will you be celebrating?
