Having spent several years abroad, there is nothing I love less than Skype.\u00a0 I can\u2019t tell you how much money, homesickness, and friendships it has saved me.\u00a0 The fact that it was founded by a Swede always made me like it just a little bit more.\u00a0 Silly, I know.\u00a0 But that\u2019s what made me raise my eyebrows just a little bit today when I saw the news.<\/p>\n
Microsoft is buying Skype.\u00a0 For 8.5 billion dollars.\u00a0 Eight. Point. Five. Billion. USD.\u00a0 That\u2019s a lot of money. (For those of you counting at home that\u2019s a cool 52,926,100,000 SEK.<\/p>\n
Several sources are saying this looks to be a good move.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have the slightest clue. I\u2019m not even going to pretend to understand the international telecommunications industry and VOIP.\u00a0 I\u2019m mostly just staggered by the amount of money exchanging hands.\u00a0 And the continued success of a small little Swedish start-up on the global market.<\/p>\n
So the word of the day? It\u2019s an easy one.\u00a0 Along the lines of messa (to send an SMS) I give you, skypa. To skype.<\/p>\n
