{"id":5111,"date":"2012-02-23T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2012-02-23T09:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/?p=5111"},"modified":"2012-02-19T15:41:30","modified_gmt":"2012-02-19T15:41:30","slug":"long-and-short-vowel-sounds-second-part","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/long-and-short-vowel-sounds-second-part\/","title":{"rendered":"Long and short vowel sounds: second part"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To continue explaining the confusing words that the Swedish language is filled with, why don\u2019t we start with the two common words: \u201cvila\u201d and \u201cvilla\u201d. \u201cVila\u201d means to rest, and \u201cvilla\u201d is a house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDet ska bli sk\u00f6nt att vila lite\u201d (\u201cIt\u2019s going to be nice to have a little rest\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHar du k\u00f6pt en villa p\u00e5 landet?\u201d (\u201cHave you bought a house in the countryside?\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVisa\u201d means to show and \u201cvissa\u201d means some.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSka jag visa v\u00e4gen till t\u00e5gstationen?\u201d (\u201cShould I show you the way to the train station?\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVissa saker h\u00e4nder bara\u201d (\u201cSome things just happen\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>The next two words are very commonly mixed up by people just learning to speak Swedish. \u201cFul\u201d means ugly and \u201cfull\u201d means drunk. Do not mix up \u201cfull\u201d and \u201cm\u00e4tt\u201d. In English we say \u201cI\u2019m full\u201d when we mean that I\u2019ve had enough to eat. In Swedish if you say \u201cJag \u00e4r full\u201d it means I\u2019m drunk. So instead of saying your drunk at the dinner table, if you want to convey how satisfied you are you say \u201cJag \u00e4r m\u00e4tt\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cH\u00e5l\u201d means a hole, whilst \u201ch\u00e5ll\u201d means you have a stitch in your side. But \u201ch\u00e5ll\u201d is a dialectal word only used in about half of Sweden. The other term for \u201ch\u00e5ll\u201d is \u201cmj\u00e4ltugg\u201d. If somebody doesn\u2019t understand the first, just try the second.
