Sweden\u2019s main airport is Arlanda, located just a bit outside of Stockholm. It\u2019s an easy enough airport to get to, but if you\u2019re heading into town, it does take a bit of travel. And let\u2019s be honest, if you\u2019ve just arrived in Stockholm on a trans-Atlantic flight, the last thing you want is more travel. So it goes sometimes though.<\/p>\n
Luckily, there are several options in getting to town from the airport. I\u2019ll run down a few of them in the post below. We\u2019ll go from cheapest to most expensive, because if you\u2019ve sprung for a ticket to Sweden, you might as well save a bit of money where you can.<\/p>\n
Your first alternative is Flygbussarna<\/a>. Flygbussarna are the buses that run on a very regular schedule from the airport into town. It\u2019s a great option if you\u2019re trying to get to Central Station in Stockholm. They usually take about 45 minutes (although traffic can cause some problems here). A one-way adult ticket will cost you 99 SEK. Not bad at all really.<\/p>\n Your second alternative is the Arlanda Express<\/a>. This is a high speed train that will get you to Central Station in about 20 minutes. No traffic to fight with here and it works with beautiful Swedish efficiency. An adult (considered to be anyone 26 and up) one-way ticket will cost 260 SEK. Quite a bit steeper than the bus, although, keep a look out for ticket deals. Often times they will offer two tickets for about the same price as one, especially during the summer.<\/p>\n Your third alternative, is a taxi. I hate taxis. A lot. Mostly because they are so very expensive and I still end up having to sit in traffic. That being said, you do what you want. The fixed price from the airport to Stockholm city is usually right around 520 SEK. And yes, it will take you about 45 minutes (just like the bus). One little note that I do appreciate is the mandate by the airport that only eco-taxis are allowed to work at the airport.<\/p>\n You can of course also rent a car. I\u2019ve never done this. I have absolutely no experience in doing so, although I do know that driving in Stockholm, if that happens to be your final destination, is absolutely not necessary and can be much slower than just taking public transportation. All the big companies can be found at the airport so just pick your poison.<\/p>\n Finally, because I wanted to see what the airport had to say about transportation, I checked their website. Apparently you can also take a helicopter from the airport. Just head over to Arlanda Helicopter<\/a> if you have a few thousand Swedish kronor to spend. Just like a rental car, I have never taken a helicopter taxi from the airport.
