In this example I have marked short o-vowels and Swedish \u00e5-vowels with the same sign because it is the same sound: \u0254 <\/strong>or o. <\/strong>Note that there are long variants aswell.<\/p>\n

Special Swedish sounds:<\/p>\n

tj-sound<\/strong>– tjena, tj\u00e4na, Tj\u00f6rn, tjej or tjack<\/strong> please compare it with schack<\/strong> with sj-sound. Schack is an exception and it is\u00a0never pronounced with German sch<\/em> like in schwartz<\/em>\u00a0or English sh<\/em> like in shoot<\/em>.<\/p>\n

sch-sound<\/strong> German sch<\/em> or English sh<\/em> for example in Gulasch<\/strong>, dusch (<\/strong> there is also <\/strong>a <\/strong>pronunciation variant with sj-sound<\/em> in this case). Many older Swedes pronunce choklad<\/strong>, chans<\/strong> and charmig<\/strong> for example with sch-\u00a0pronunciation<\/em>, even many dialects. However,\u00a0many people\u00a0from the\u00a0younger generation\u00a0choose to pronounce \u00a0these words with the popular lyranx-sound as\u00a0you guys can see in the next example.<\/p>\n

sj-sound (lyranx)<\/strong>\u00a0– sju, sjal, sjunga, sjysst (also: schysst). The spelling of Sj-sound<\/em>\u00a0has no special rules in Swedish it follows\u00a0tradition and sometimes original spelling of loan words. g<\/strong>enre, skj<\/strong>orta, \u00a0ch<\/strong>ans, ch<\/strong>oklad, ch<\/strong>armig\u00a0dusch, <\/strong>moti<\/strong>on, stati<\/strong>on. Please also note that there are dialectal differences in pronunciation, but even individuals can change between the different variants of the words both in written and spoken language. So don\u2019t be worry if your pronunciation is not perfect. These sounds are very close to each other and people will perfectly understand you.<\/p>\n

Retroflex sounds<\/strong>: rn, rt, rs, rl- barn (ba:\u0273<\/strong>), fort (f\u028a\u0288<\/strong><\/strong>)\u00a0, kors (k\u0254\u0282) *<\/strong>, Karl (Ka:\u026d<\/strong>). Please note that the pronunciation of n, t, l, and s is not exactly the same that you would expect. R partly assimilates in these combinations and creates a modificated sound.<\/p>\n

* note that retroflex sounds can also appear\u00a0between two words in spoken language when people speak fast: Jag kommer<\/strong> s<\/strong>en.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0I am coming later<\/em>. But most of the time people say: Jag kommer sen<\/em>. (with English s-sound) or Han fr\u00e5gar<\/strong> s<\/strong>ig varf\u00f6r. He is asking himself why<\/em>.<\/p>\n

y-sound<\/strong> yr, yrke, fy, ty. This sound is the hardest vowel to hear for a foreign ear. I would recommend that you train it with short words like ty, fy, My, sy, because you don\u00b4t have other sounds blocking\u00a0the flow of the pronunciation (the way of the air coming out of your mouth if you like). If you can pronounce the Swedish letter\u00a0u<\/strong>, you could also try to train the combination uj<\/strong> which might be the closest to the y-sound.
