{"id":782,"date":"2010-04-25T10:00:37","date_gmt":"2010-04-25T10:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/?p=782"},"modified":"2010-04-25T10:00:37","modified_gmt":"2010-04-25T10:00:37","slug":"the-news-from-stockholm-%e2%80%93-freedom-of-the-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/the-news-from-stockholm-%e2%80%93-freedom-of-the-press\/","title":{"rendered":"The News from Stockholm \u2013 Freedom of the Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the past week, a discussion has been brewing in Sweden about freedom of the press.\u00a0 The discussion stems from recent revelations that a right-wing newspaper has received government funding.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nationell Idag<\/em>, a newspaper published by Nationaldemokraterna, has been granted about 1.7 million SEK in support for the 2010 calendar year (along with about 700,000 SEK for part of 2009) by Presst\u00f6dsn\u00e4mnden.<\/p>\n<p>Presst\u00f6dsn\u00e4mnden (Press Subsidies Council) is the government organization in charge of handing out press subsidies to newspapers which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presstodsnamnden.se\/Presst%C3%B6d%20S%C3%B6k%20st%C3%B6d.htm\">meet certain criteria<\/a>.\u00a0 This includes the overall circulation, subscription numbers, and even price. The Press Subsidies Council does not, however, take into consideration the content of any of the newspapers, but instead uses the aforementioned criteria when making decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the political views of Nationaldemokraterna, a group that bases its political platform on fear and xenophobia, uproar has followed. And rightfully so. The subsidies handed out by Presst\u00f6dsn\u00e4mnden are supported by the tax payer, the majority of who do not support the political extremism of Nationaldemokraterna.<\/p>\n<p>The granting of the money to the newspaper has led to a far reaching discussion.\u00a0 About freedom of the press.\u00a0 About the use of tax payer money. About what constitutes m\u00e5ngfalden p\u00e5 dagstidningsmarknaden (diversity in the newspaper sector).\u00a0 Even about economic competition.\u00a0 In the wake of it all, the laws governing Presst\u00f6dsn\u00e4mnden are coming under scrutiny and <em>Nationell Idag<\/em> is receiving more press than they could have printed themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Some are arguing that Presst\u00f6dsn\u00e4mnden must continue to act as it has in order to support the many different opinions of the Swedish press.\u00a0 That by not examining the content, but instead granting money based on the letter of the law, they are ensuring a diversity of opinions.\u00a0 Others argue that the government subsidies give fringe groups a platform to yell from.\u00a0 That tax money should be used to support what many deem to be hate speech.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
