In this post, we\u2019ll discuss the Swedish word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brukar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, or \u201cusually\u201d, which also functions as a helping verb. This verb comes in handy when talking about your daily routine, what you usually do in your free time, and more! We\u2019ll even cover another way to modify sentences by using frequency adverbs, like often, always, sometimes, and never.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First, to work with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brukar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we need to remember to put our main verb in the infinitive form. If you need a reminder of how that works, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/step-up-your-swedish-with-helping-verbs\/\">my last post here<\/a>\u00a0where I break down that subject and provide you with a few examples:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eva brukar vakna tidigt.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eva usually wakes up early.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunden brukar g\u00e5 ut tre g\u00e5nger om dagen.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The dog usually goes out three times a day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Familjen brukar cykla tillsammans p\u00e5 helgerna.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\nThe family bikes together on the weekends.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\nYou can also use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brukar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in question format with words like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vad, n\u00e4r<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8230; ?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">-Vad brukar du<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> g\u00f6ra<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> p\u00e5 fritiden?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 -What do you usually do in your free time?<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">-Jag brukar <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tr\u00e4ffa<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> v\u00e4nner p\u00e5 fritiden.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 -I usually meet friends in my free time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">-N\u00e4r brukar du g\u00e5 p\u00e5 gymmet?<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When do you usually go to the gym?<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">-Jag brukar g\u00e5 p\u00e5 gymmet efter jobbet. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0-I usually go to the gym after work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><br \/>\nBrukar<\/em> is good for comparisons as well.\u00a0 As in, &#8220;Do you <\/span>usually do this or<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Brukar hon \u00e5ka t\u00e5g eller buss till mataff\u00e4ren?\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\nDoes she usually take the train or bus to the grocery store?<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brukar du \u00e4ta lunch vid datorn eller vid lunchbordet?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you usually eat lunch at the computer or the lunch table?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Helping verbs can also be conjugated into the past tense. For example, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brukade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the equivalent of \u201cused to\u201d in English, when used with an action verb:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brukar -&gt; brukade\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0usually &#8211; &gt; used to\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">De brukade cykla till stationen varje dag.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They used to bike to the station every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jag brukade sova med lampan t\u00e4nd n\u00e4r jag var liten.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I used to sleep with the light on when I was little.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\nIn addition to describing what you usually do, how about things you never, sometimes, always do? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frekvensadverb<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or frequency adverbs, are great in expressing this notion! However, the next adverb,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ibland,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is special and wants to be treated as such. It goes either first or last in a Swedish sentence:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>ibland\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 sometimes\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ibland diskuterar vi politik p\u00e5 jobbet.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sometimes we discuss politics at work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Jag k\u00e4nner mig s\u00e5 tr\u00f6tt ibland<\/em>.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I feel so tired sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, if you want to earn bonus points from this grammar lesson, you can add these two concepts together, with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brukar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> AND and a frequency adverb:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vi brukade alltid \u00e5ka till sommarstugan i juli.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We used to always go to the cabin in July.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">L\u00e4rarna brukar aldrig till\u00e5ta elever att \u00e4ta i klassrummet.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The teachers usually never allow students to eat in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This sentence structure is pretty basic, focusing on the use of these words in a main clause. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To learn about word order in subordinate clauses, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/swedish-sentence-adverbials\/\">this blog post.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now it\u2019s your turn!
