This comes into play when answering yes or no questions and uses an inverted structure. Essentially, it&#8217;s the &#8220;yes, I do&#8221; or &#8220;no, I do not&#8221; of Swedish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are a few different ways of answering questions in Swedish. The first way is to more or less repeat what you heard, adding a \u201cja\u201d or \u201cnej\u201d Till exempel:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bor du i Ume\u00e5? <\/span><\/em> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Do you live in Ume\u00e5?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Ja, jag bor i Ume\u00e5.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Yes, I live in Ume\u00e5.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Nej, jag bor inte i Ume\u00e5.<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0No, I do not live in Ume\u00e5.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first option is great but then there is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kortsvar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, or short answer. In my experience, this is almost a more common way to answer yes and no questions among native speakers. Rather than repeating the verb used in the question, you substitute it for <em>g\u00f6r <\/em>(do).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Talar du isl\u00e4ndska?\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Do you speak Icelandic?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Ja, det g\u00f6r jag.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Yes, I do.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Nej, det g\u00f6r jag inte. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em> \u00a0 \u00a0 No, I do not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Cyklar du till jobbet?\u00a0<\/em> \u00a0 \u00a0 Do you ride your bike to work?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Ja, det g\u00f6r jag.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Yes, I do.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Nej, det g\u00f6r jag inte.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0 No, I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Again, instead of repeating the original verb <em>cyklar<\/em>, we use <em>g\u00f6r<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I often tell my students that it\u2019s sort of the \u201cYup, I do\u201d or \u201cNope, I don\u2019t.\u201d It&#8217;s quick, straightforward and slightly less cumbersome than repeating the whole sentence.
