As we say hej d\u00e5<\/em> to 2019, some folks will ring in the New Year by making lofty goals and striving to be a better person. <\/span>Ett ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte<\/span><\/i> is Swedish for a New Year\u2019s Resolution. Swedes and Americans alike share in this tradition of making goals and promises for the upcoming year. In this blog, I touch on the idea of New Year\u2019s Resolutions while integrating personal characteristics as a grammar point. Want to be more punktlig<\/em> (punctual) with your deadlines or t\u00e5lmodig<\/em> (patient) with family?\u00a0 Or perhaps your New Year\u2019s Resolution is just to study more Swedish?! Well then, let\u2019s go!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First, if you\u2019d like to wish someone \u201cHappy New Year\u201d you say <\/span>Gott nytt \u00e5r!<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why the <\/span>gott<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>nytt<\/span><\/i> forms of these adjectives?\u00a0 Swedish grammar has adjective agreement, which means that the adjective changes form depending on the thing it is describing. If you need a re-cap, read this blog article here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Essentially, <\/span>ett \u00e5r<\/span><\/i> pushes adjectives into their t-form, so <\/span>Gott<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>nytt<\/span><\/i> pair with <\/span>\u00e5r<\/span><\/i> in the phrase \u201c<\/span>Gott nytt \u00e5r<\/span><\/i>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another ett-noun is <\/span>ett ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte<\/span><\/i>, or New Year\u2019s Resolution. Plural form is ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6ften<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It seems that these top 5 echo some of the most common resolutions from year to year. But do people really keep them up?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Sometimes it\u2019s less about the things you want to do and more about the type of person you are striving to be. Therefore, I have included some characteristics used to describe people in Swedish.\u00a0 Some have negative connotations, and other are more positive:<\/span><\/p>\n

    And lastly, one of my favorites although it is not an adjective, rather a noun, en tidsoptimist<\/em>. We say <\/span>a procrastinator<\/span><\/i>, but in Swedish, you\u2019re just a \u201ctime optimist.”\u00a0 That’s a rather generous way of putting it, don’t you think?<\/span><\/p>\n
