Unfortunately, it\u2019s quite common this time of year for folks to catch a cold. Whether you have the little \u201cbug\u201d going around the office, or the flu, it is no fun to be sick! In this post I\u2019ll cover some vocab that is helpful to know when you\u2019re not feeling well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First, when something hurts, whether it\u2019s a sore back or headache, use the phrase <strong>&#8220;<\/strong><\/span><strong><i>ha ont i<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong> &#8220;<\/strong> plus the body part in definite form.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jag har ont i ryggen. &#8230;i armen, i handen, i foten.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I have pain in my back, in my arm, in my hand, in my foot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vi sprang j\u00e4ttemycket ig\u00e5r, vi kommer att ha ont i benen imorgon.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We ran a lot yesterday, we\u2019re going to have sore legs tomorrow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now, I should note that this structure doesn&#8217;t translate word for word to English. <em>Jag har ont i huvudet,<\/em> is literally &#8220;I have pain in the head.&#8221; A better English equivalent is &#8220;I have a headache&#8221; or &#8220;my head hurts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you need a reminder of body parts in their various forms, see this past post <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/body-parts-in-swedish-part-1-the-head-and-face\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, for some more explanation on <em>ont i<\/em> and other pain words in Swedish like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">v\u00e4rk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sm\u00e4rta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/how-to-ache-in-swedish\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">see this post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and read the comments as well!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are some common adjectives, and all of their inflections, to use when you are feeling a bit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bl\u00e4:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>sjuk -&gt; sjukt -&gt; sjuka\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sick\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Henrik har stannat hemma i 3 dagar, han \u00e4r riktigt sjuk.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Henrik has stayed home for 3 days, he is really sick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">*this is often the first word students learn in Swedish for \u201csick.\u201d Although, it&#8217;s most often used though when you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">quite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> sick. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">F\u00f6rkyld <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rather, is a bit more common for \u201csick\u201d when you\u2019re feeling 100% but still functioning.\u00a0 You&#8217;re \u201cunder the weather,\u201d or \u201chave a bug.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>f\u00f6rkyld -&gt; f\u00f6rkylt -&gt; f\u00f6rkylda<\/strong> <\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0sick, as in have a cold<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jag \u00e4r f\u00f6rkyld och har ont i huvudet.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I am sick and have a headache.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>snuvig\u00a0 -&gt; snuvigt -&gt; snuviga<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0congested, plugged up<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Det \u00e4r inte kul att vara snuvig p\u00e5 jobbet.\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is not fun to be congested at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>yr\u00a0 -&gt; yrt -&gt; yra\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/i><\/strong>dizzy<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jag k\u00e4nner mig lite yr men jag vet inte varf\u00f6r.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I am feeling a bit dizzy but I don\u2019t know why. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">S\u00e5 <strong>hur m\u00e5r du<\/strong><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">?\u00a0 So, how are you feeling?\u00a0 This is the \u201chow are you?\u201d question that you\u2019ll want to ask when you know someone is not feeling their best. Use the verb <em>m\u00e5r<\/em> + <em>bra, inte bra, illa, d\u00e5lig<\/em>, etc in response to this question.
