A small town with a big reputation, Jokkmokk, is hosting its 415th Winter Market. Celebrating life above the Arctic Circle and putting a spotlight on S\u00e1mi culture, this tiny town of around 2,000 swells to over 10,000 during market week. So, it only makes sense that this month\u2019s music post features S\u00e1mi music! Pop beats, hip-hop, smooth jazz, singer-songwriter ballads &#8211; it\u2019s all there. But this genre sets itself apart sharing unique voices from the S\u00e1mi experience often unrepresented by mainstream society. These artists share their appreciation of the natural world, speak about journeys of self-discovery, and voice viewpoints on our changing world.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>S\u00e1mi Music Often Features<em> jojk<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.In short, <em>jojk<\/em> is a S\u00e1mi vocal tradition used when one is moved by a powerful feeling. It is one of the oldest oral traditions in Europe. One can <em>jojk<\/em> for a loved one, special occasion, a beautiful landscape, out of sadness, or joy.\u00a0 Jojking was banned in Sweden as a way to repress S\u00e1mi traditions at boarding schools and in the public until as late as the 1950&#8217;s. Now it&#8217;s celebrated once again and is a respected form of expression. Sara Marielle Gaup Beaska explains how this<em> jojk<\/em> \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">G<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>ulahallat Eatnamiin \/ <\/em><\/span>We Speak Earth&#8221; came to her.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gulahallat\u00a0Eatnamiin \/ WE\u00a0SPEAK\u00a0EARTH\u00a0\/ Sara Marielle Gaup Beaska\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VzBmDpDAskQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>What spr\u00e5k are S\u00e1mi artists using?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>S\u00e1mi musicians use S\u00e1mi and Nordic languages<\/strong>, even English, to reach diverse audiences.\u00a0 A surge in interest from young people to keep S\u00e1mi languages alive is ever-present among S\u00e1mi musicians and producers. Saara Hermansson won the S\u00e1mi Grand Prix song contest in 2019 with her original piece,\u00a0 \u201c<em>Mov laavlome<\/em> \/ My Song.&#8221; The text is written in South S\u00e1mi, spoken by under 1,000 speakers across Norway and Sweden.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>S\u00e1mi Must-Know Artists<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Musician <strong>Sofia Jannok<\/strong> <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">jojks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and sings in S\u00e1mi, Swedish, and English. A prominent voice in the S\u00e1mi community, she recently fueled a social movement to support the result of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sverigesradio.se\/sida\/gruppsida.aspx?programid=2327&amp;grupp=22118&amp;fbclid=IwAR1sD2IfaRCIk9RQOAMEsAFiDKZEzSof69vOR9z6NVgP8t81_Vlu4Ljh610\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Girjasdomen<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; a historic victory by the Girjas community over the Swedish state that has been overshadowed by hateful and racist backlash. Hear her message and in the song, &#8220;This is My Land.&#8221; You go, Sofia!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SOFIA JANNOK - THIS IS MY LAND (Official)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/riXVuhlMNQA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Maxida M\u00e4rak<\/strong> is a headliner for Jokkmokk\u2019s concert lineup this year featuring songs from her September 2019 release \u201c<em>Utopi<\/em> \/ Utopia.\u201d She wrote <em>Nikesunnas<\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0jojk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for her daughter and collaborated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Lv6_RNuSehI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Downhill Bluegrass Band<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to create this version in 2015.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another guest performer at this year\u2019s market is Jokkmokk rapper and producer, <strong>Kitok<\/strong>. He made Swedish charts with his 2014 song \u201cJokkmokk Paradise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>John Henrik Fj\u00e4llgren<\/strong> recently released &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EF1s5XSOFDQ&amp;fbclid=IwAR0jVAx-6A_BmaPfiosW0mDrbIyldTzTwHKpJhPexCAxPOpVtcpsUEEJVc0\">The Way You Make Me Feel<\/a>&#8221; featuring Elin Oskal. John Henrik has taken his jojking to Swedish television competing in Sweden&#8217;s Got Talent as well as the Swedish Song Contest <em>Melodifestivalen<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Finding Meaning in Music<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">S\u00e1mi preschool teacher Evelina Olofsson and I met while she was studying at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.samernas.se\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">S\u00e1mi Education Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Jokkmokk in 2013. We bonded over music and it is something that helps stay us connected today! A big shout-out goes to Evelina for helping me with this post and curating a playlist featuring some S\u00e1mi artists you need to know! When I asked her <strong>what S\u00e1mi music means to her<\/strong> and she replied with this, first in South S\u00e1mi, then Swedish, which I translated to English:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSaemien musihke munnjan lea raeffie. Origin. The coming days.
