Two posts ago, I covered comparative adjectives – happy, happier, happiest, remember?\u00a0 This essential grammar concept allows you to mention your younger cousin, older sister, or the best ice cream place in town. This week we\u2019ll move to the irregular adjectives in their comparative form, but don’t worry, there are patterns here, too! <\/span>Okej, nu k\u00f6r vi!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>The irregular adjectives often change their first vowel when shifting from positiv <\/em>to komparativ<\/em>. For example, we swap a “u” for a “y” here: <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>tung \u2192 tyngre \u2192 tyngst \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em> <\/strong>
\nheavy \u2192 heavier \u2192 heaviest<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>We still see the -re<\/em> ending to the komparativ<\/em> form, as well -st<\/em>, and -sta<\/em> with superlative obest\u00e4md<\/em> and best\u00e4md<\/em>. Remember, we use the superlativ best\u00e4md<\/em> form when we\u2019re talking about “the best hotdog stand in Stockholm \/Den b\u00e4sta korvkiosken i Stockholm<\/em>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Note that a few adjectives change their root entirely. For example:<\/p>\n

gammal \u2192 \u00e4ldre \u2192 \u00e4ldst
\n<\/strong>old\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u2192 older \u2192 oldest<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
