Kvartsamtalet\u2019<\/span><\/i>s host Parisa Amiri has quite the resume. A native Stockholmer, she\u2019s been an editor of <\/span>N\u00f6jesguiden<\/span><\/i><\/a>,<\/span><\/i> Sweden\u2019s most widely circulated publication on music, entertainment, and the performing arts. She\u2019s also hosted for the pop culture PP3 program on <\/span>Sveriges radio<\/span><\/i>, as well as appeared on TV-series like <\/span>P\u00e5 sp\u00e5ret<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Babel bio<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This week we\u2019re going to feature Parisa\u2019s interview with writer and artist Jason Diakit\u00e9, perhaps better known as rapper Timbuktu. He is a household name in Sweden, first for his pioneering of Swedish hip hop, and more recently for his work championing racial and social justice. His recently published En droppe midnatt<\/em> \/ A Drop of Midnight is a fascinating memoir where Jason retells a complex family story from the slavery in the American south to modern-era Sweden (you HAVE to read this one!) Contrary to Parisa, Jason has a southern Swedish dialect because he hails from Lund, in Sk\u00e5ne. Also called <\/span>sk\u00e5nska<\/span><\/i>, you\u2019ll notice the intonation is different, as well as pronunciation of a few letters. For example the sk\u00e5nska \u201cr\u201d is pronounced gutturally, rather than the soft roll of the \u201cr\u201d we hear in <\/span>rikssvenska<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some <\/span>guldbitar<\/span><\/i> (gold nuggets) that I enjoyed in this episode are as follows; Jason commenting on a photo of his uncle next to President Trump, sharing his feelings on folks who\u2019ve done covers of his songs and how that transforms their meaning, and Jason ranking fake gossip headlines on how likely they would be. He also addresses the national <\/span>Sverigedemokraterna<\/span><\/i>\u2019s party use of his song lyrics for a campaign and what he did about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
