You\u2019ve made it to the first Swedish blog post of the new year – <\/span>grattis!<\/span><\/i> ? If you\u2019re a new subscriber, <\/span>v\u00e4lkommen<\/span><\/i>! If you\u2019re a weekly reader, <\/span>hej och tack<\/span><\/i> for your readership each week! My first post of each month always has a connection to music. Music is one of my absolute favorite language learning tools. This week, we\u2019ll look at the song \u201cSand \u00f6verall<\/em>t\u201d by Laleh. I carries a feel of release and rebirth that I feel speaks well to the first week of 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am not one to draft a long list of <\/span>ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6ften<\/span><\/i> (New Year\u2019s Resolutions). Quite simply because I have a hard time keeping them. <\/span>\u00c4t mindre chips, drick mindre kaffe<\/span><\/i> (Eat less chips, drink less coffee). Det vill jag inte<\/em> \/ I don\u2019t want to! I\u2019m more of a big-picture thinker when it comes to resolutions. I am more likely to do an inventory on the year that has passed to inform the one to come. What did I do well, how did I feel, what should I take on or let go?<\/span><\/p>\n

Through her music, Laleh has this ability to explore a nuance and at the same time, honor the bigger picture. The song I chose to feature on the blog today is called \u201cSand \u00f6verallt<\/em>\u201d (Sand Everywhere) and opens with the line \u201cVi bygger slott av sand<\/em>\u201d (We build castles of sand). Laleh challenges the idea of permanence in the plans we make and the things we built, both physically <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> metaphorically. <\/span>

If there is anything that 2020 has reinforced for me, it is to let go of what you cannot control. “Sl\u00e4pp det du kan<\/em><\/strong> \/ Release what you can” and “S\u00e5 mycket on\u00f6digt man b\u00e4r p\u00e5<\/em><\/strong> \/ So much that you needlessly carry” are a few lines from the song that reinforce that idea for me. I wrote a blog featuring Laleh a while back and her song V\u00e5rens f\u00f6rsta dag<\/em>. She’s lived a fascinating life thus far and is a Chelsea favorite.\u00a0 I also recommend \u201cDet kommer bli bra<\/em><\/a>\u201d for a solid “hej d\u00e5, 2020″\u00a0<\/em>and look into the future.<\/p>\n

Now for an exercise to improve your Swedish listening skills.\u00a0<\/strong>
\nOn a sheet of paper write numbers 1-5 on separate lines with the bolded Swedish word:<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>1. <\/span>sand<\/b> – sand <\/span>
\n<\/span>2. <\/span>kan<\/b> – helping verb \u201ccan”<\/span>
\n<\/span>3. <\/span>min\/mitt\/mina<\/b>: these are the possessives for “my” corresponding to en, ett,<\/em> or plural nouns<\/span>
\n<\/span>4. <\/span>man<\/b>\u00a0 – the subject \u201cone\u201d or general “you”\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>5. <\/span>det<\/b> – it \/ that\u00a0 *Remember, oftentimes we drop the \u201ct\u201d from the end of det<\/em> in our pronunciation. It sounds like “deh.”<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Listen to the song and put a tally mark beside the word, each time you hear it.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • My suggestion is to focus on 2-3 words the first time you listen to the song. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Then listen again and target the remaining words. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Listen a final time to check your work.\n

    *OBS!<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 The word det<\/em> is used a LOT in this song (psssst! over TWENTY times). So make listen to the song once only focusing on det<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
