Many folks simply grab a piece of fruit and cup of coffee as they spring out the door. But when Swedes take the time, they are sure to cover every food group in their first nosh of the day. In November, I mentioned a series from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/si.se\/\">Svenska institutet<\/a> <\/em>that I\u2019d be coming back to called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Det svenska k\u00f6ket \/ The Swedish Kitchen.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Then, we covered the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/the-swedish-kitchen-series-cozy-friday\/\">modern tradition, <\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fredagsmys<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Now, we\u2019ll look at <em>frukost<\/em>. At first mention, it doesn\u2019t seem that exciting, but trust me, there are a few staples on the Swedish <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">frukostbord<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (breakfast table) that are worth a second-glance.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Swedish word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">frukost<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has German etymology. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fr\u00fch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> means early in German, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kost<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is defined as \u201cfood,\u201d or \u201cmeal.\u201d <em>Det svenska k\u00f6ket&#8217;s<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0chapter on <em>frukost<\/em> has a list of the most common things one will find on a <em>svenskt frukostbord<\/em>.\u00a0 Below I have provided the English translations to accompany that list, as well as some explanations to the standouts that crave some content &#8211; you\u2019ll see those ones bolded. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><i>kokt \u00e4gg<\/i><\/b> <b>cooked\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 egg (hard\/soft boiled)<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">*Pan fried or scrambled eggs are something Swedes enjoy for weekend brunch. Most commonly, a hard or soft boiled egg is eaten with a spoon from an egg cup.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gr\u00f6t\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> warm <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">porridge or oatmeal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">m\u00fcsli<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">muesli, a mix oats, fruits, nuts, seeds mix <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">flingor<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">flakes (corn flakes), eaten with yoghurt or milk<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong><i>filmj\u00f6lk <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/i>fermented milk<br \/>\n<\/strong>*Simply put, <em>filmj\u00f6lk<\/em>, or just <em>fil<\/em> is somewhere in between yoghurt and milk in consistency. Typically, it&#8217;s unsweetened, and has a &#8220;nice&#8221; zip to it. When speaking about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kaviar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at breakfast, we\u2019re not talking about expensive tins of fish roe, rather a creamy, salty fish spread that comes in a tube. It\u2019s not for the faint of heart and delivers a shock to Swedish breakfast newbies. The iconic blue tube of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kalles kaviar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a staple in many Swedish refrigerators.
