It&#8217;s essentially a Swede\u2019s way of saying, \u201cBundle up, we&#8217;re going outside!\u201d Even during the coldest months, Swedes manage to get out and enjoy the natural world. In this blog entry, we\u2019ll cover some common winter verbs, and highlight three activities that are unique to Sweden and the Nordic Countries.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A verb that accompanies many Swedish recreation verbs is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00e5ka<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This verb works in English as \u201cto go\u201d or \u201cto ride.\u201d Now, I should mention that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00e5ka<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the verb we use to say \u201cgo\u201d by means other than our two feet. \u201cGo skating\u201d for example in Swedish is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00e5ka skridskor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. There are loads of<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00e5ka<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> variations for activities but first, let&#8217;s look at the different forms of <em>\u00e5ka:<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>infinitive: <\/b><b><i>att \u00e5ka<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vill du och Johanna \u00e5ka l\u00e4ngdskidor med oss n\u00e4sta helg?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you and Johanna want to go cross-country skiing next weekend?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>present tense:<\/b><em><b> \u00e5ker <\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">F\u00f6rskolebarn \u00e5ker spark varje dag<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Preschoolers go kick-sledding every day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>past perfect: <\/b><b><i>har \u00e5kt<\/i><\/b><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jag har aldrig \u00e5kt l\u00e5ngf\u00e4rdsskridskor, men jag vill g\u00e4rna testa det! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I have never gone Nordic skating, but I really want to try it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>past: <em>\u00e5kte <\/em><\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I julas \u00e5kte vi skidor i \u00c5re. Commonly done once as soon as the lakes are freshly frozen and the ice is still relatively thin, this type of skating is about covering a lot of ground quickly. You use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stavar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (poles) as you skate so the stride looks a bit like that of cross-country skiing. Kick-sleds are commonly used as transportation in the winter. Many folks trade their bicycles for kick-sleds as soon as the snow falls. Oftentimes, sidewalks and roads are not shoveled down to the cement, rather, fine gravel is laid into the snow so the snow becomes packed, but not slick. This creates a hard surface perfect for gliding. Folks in the Nordic countries love a good sauna and a brisk swim. Some people even dare to take this concept a step further, dunking themselves into freezing cold, icy water. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kallbada <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">concept has gained a bit of speed in recent years. There is a website called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kallbad.nu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kallbad.nu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that serves cold bathing enthusiasts.
