Are you ready for Swedish Expressions of Time – Round tv\u00e5<\/em>?! In last week\u2019s post, I gave you three tips to build a solid foundation with Swedish <\/a><\/span>tidsuttryck. <\/span><\/i>To build on this for today, we\u2019ll cover additional present tense expressions, and examine the way Swedish prepositions i<\/em> and p\u00e5<\/em> accompany expressions of time throughout the tenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This Week” and “That Year”<\/h3>\n

The way we express \u201cthis\u201d and \u201cthat\u201d varies in Swedish.\u00a0 But in the case of time expressions, start with the noun you want to use. It is day, week, or year? Then we must get its article right. Is it an en<\/em>, or an ett<\/em> noun? Or is it plural?<\/span>
\n<\/span>

\n<\/span>Once we know its article, we can add the first part of the phrase, either den, det,<\/em> or de. <\/em><\/span>
\n<\/span>Den<\/em> corresponds to singular en<\/em> nouns, det<\/em> corresponds to singular ett<\/em> nouns, and de<\/em> corresponds to plural nouns (regardless of the en<\/em> or ett<\/em> in their singular form). Add h\u00e4r<\/em> for “this” and d\u00e4r<\/em> for “that.” De<\/em> + h\u00e4r<\/em> or d\u00e4r<\/em> becomes “these” or “those.” Top it off with the definite (or best\u00e4md<\/em>) form of the noun. For example: <\/span>

Prepositions i<\/em> and p\u00e5<\/em> – Present and Past<\/h3>\n

Folkuniversitetet’s <\/em><\/a>Form<\/span><\/span> i fokus Del A<\/span><\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/em> sorts i<\/em> and p\u00e5<\/em> nicely with the graphic below. The authors provide four categories\u00a0<\/em>at top of the chart; f\u00f6rra, denna, n\u00e4sta,<\/i> and varje. <\/i>Each of these is used to help us distinguish the time frame. Let\u2019s review those first, as they are tidsuttryck<\/em> on their own:

\n<\/span>f\u00f6rra<\/i><\/b> = last, past tense<\/b>
\n<\/span>Use this with the definite form of the noun<\/span>
\n<\/span>f\u00f6rra sommaren<\/span><\/i> \u2192 last summer<\/span>

\n<\/span>denna\/detta <\/i><\/b>= this or that present tense<\/b>
\n<\/span>Use <\/span>denna<\/span><\/i> or <\/span>detta<\/span><\/i> depending upon the article of the noun. Then combine it with the indefinite form of the noun<\/span>

\ndetta \u00e5r<\/em> \u2192 this year<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/b>n\u00e4sta<\/i><\/b> = next, future or present<\/b>
\n<\/span>Use <\/span>n\u00e4sta<\/span><\/i> with the indefinite form of the noun<\/span>
\n<\/span>n\u00e4sta sommar <\/span><\/i>\u2192 next summer <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>varje<\/i><\/b> = every or each, present tense<\/b>
\n<\/b>Use this to describe something that happens regularly or seasonally. <\/span>Varje<\/span><\/i> is paired with an indefinite noun.<\/span>
\n<\/span>varje sommar<\/em> \u2192 every summer<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Now use these 4 categories to look at the <\/span>i<\/span><\/i> versus <\/span>p\u00e5<\/span><\/i> phrases throughout the tenses. Note that there are several variations in the nouns, too!<\/span>
