In last week\u2019s post, I gave you <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/swedish-expressions-of-time-round-1\/\">three tips to build a solid foundation with Swedish <\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tidsuttryck. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To build on this for today, we\u2019ll cover additional present tense expressions, and examine the way Swedish prepositions<em> i<\/em> and<em> p\u00e5<\/em> accompany expressions of time throughout the tenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;This Week&#8221; and &#8220;That Year&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The way we express \u201cthis\u201d and \u201cthat\u201d varies in Swedish.\u00a0 But in the case of time expressions, start with the noun you want to use. It is day, week, or year? Then we must get its article right. Is it an <em>en<\/em>, or an e<em>tt<\/em> noun? Or is it plural?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">en dag \u2192<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> dagar\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a day <em>\u2192 <\/em>days<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">en m\u00e5nad \u2192 m\u00e5nader\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0a month <em>\u2192 <\/em>months<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ett \u00e5r \u2192 \u00e5r\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a year \u2192 years\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">en vecka \u2192 veckor\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a week \u2192 weeks<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>en morgon<\/em> <em>\u2192 morgnar\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em>a morning <em>\u2192 <\/em>mornings<br \/>\n<em>en vinter \u2192 vintrar\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/em>a winter \u2192 winters<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once we know its article, we can add the first part of the phrase, either <em>den, det,<\/em> or <em>de. <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Den<\/em> corresponds to singular<em> en<\/em> nouns, <em>det<\/em> corresponds to singular <em>ett<\/em> nouns, and <em>de<\/em> corresponds to plural nouns (regardless of the <em>en<\/em> or <em>ett<\/em> in their singular form). Add <em>h\u00e4r<\/em> for &#8220;this&#8221; and <em>d\u00e4r<\/em> for &#8220;that.&#8221; <em>De<\/em> + <em>h\u00e4r<\/em> or <em>d\u00e4r<\/em> becomes &#8220;these&#8221; or &#8220;those.&#8221; Top it off with the definite (or<em> best\u00e4md<\/em>) form of the noun. For example: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>den h\u00e4r veckan<\/em> \u2192 this week<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>den h\u00e4r m\u00e5naden<\/em> \u2192 this month<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>det h\u00e4r \u00e5ret<\/em> \u2192 this year <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>de d\u00e4r dagarna<\/em> \u2192 those days<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>de h\u00e4r veckorna<\/em>\u2192 these weeks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Prepositions <em>i<\/em> and <em>p\u00e5<\/em> &#8211; Present and Past<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.folkuniversitetet.se\/\"><em>Folkuniversitetet&#8217;s <\/em><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Form<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> i fokus Del A<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">,<\/span><\/em> sorts<em> i<\/em> and <em>p\u00e5<\/em> nicely with the graphic below. The authors provide four categories<em>\u00a0<\/em>at top of the chart; <i>f\u00f6rra, denna, n\u00e4sta,<\/i> and <i>varje. <\/i>Each of these is used to help us distinguish the time frame. Let\u2019s review those first, as they are<em> tidsuttryck<\/em> on their own:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><i>f\u00f6rra<\/i><\/b><b> = last, past tense<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use this with the definite form of the noun<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">f\u00f6rra sommaren<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2192 last summer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><i>denna\/detta <\/i><\/b><b>= this or that present tense<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">denna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">detta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> depending upon the article of the noun. Then combine it with the indefinite form of the noun<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">denna sommar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2192 this summer<br \/>\n<em>detta \u00e5r<\/em> \u2192 this year<\/p>\n<p><\/span><b><\/b><b><i>n\u00e4sta<\/i><\/b><b> = next, future or present<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">n\u00e4sta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with the indefinite form of the noun<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">n\u00e4sta sommar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2192 next summer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><i>varje<\/i><\/b><b> = every or each, present tense<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use this to describe something that happens regularly or seasonally. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Varje<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is paired with an indefinite noun.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>varje sommar<\/em> \u2192 every summer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now use these 4 categories to look at the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">i<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> versus <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">p\u00e5<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> phrases throughout the tenses.
