What do pop star Darin and the Crown Princess Victoria have in common? Is it their love of a good <\/span>fika<\/span><\/i> at the gay-friendly caf\u00e9\u00a0<\/span>Chokladkoppen,<\/span><\/i><\/a> just a stone\u2019s throw from the Royal Castle? Perhaps. But this year it’s something bigger; they each share the spotlight in receiving awards from the Swedish LBGT magazine <\/span>QX<\/span><\/i>. In this week\u2019s music blog, we\u2019ll highlight artist Darin\u2019s win at <\/span>Gaygalan, <\/span><\/i>some LGBT vocab, and read both his and Victoria\u2019s digital acceptances in Swedish.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

First, Some Queer Vocab:<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

HBTQ<\/em> is the Swedish equivalent for LGBT. It stands for:<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Homosexuella\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>Bisexuella<\/span>
\n<\/span>Transpersoner<\/span>
\n<\/span>Queer<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The words above are almost identical to their counterparts in English. You can also use the adjective cognates <\/span>gay<\/span><\/i> as well as <\/span>straight<\/span><\/i>\u00a0with a Swedish lilt in your pronunciation. For more queer vocab, visit <\/span>RFSL\u2019s website.<\/span><\/a>

Vad \u00e4r QX?<\/em> What is QX?<\/span><\/h2>\n

QX<\/span><\/i><\/a> is a monthly Swedish publication started in 1995 for gay and gay-friendly audiences. Their mission is to create a platform for the LGBT community in the Nordic Countries. QX <\/em>writers pen content in Danish, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, and even German. For queer travelers, <\/span>QX<\/span><\/i> puts out a Gay Guide to Stockholm in English to highlight gay events and gay-friendly travel spots.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Vad \u00e4r Gaygalan?<\/em> What is the “Gay Gala”?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The annual <\/span>Gaygalan<\/span><\/i> is a red carpet event that was established by <\/span>QX<\/span><\/i> in 1999 to celebrate the year\u2019s best-ofs. <\/span>QX<\/span><\/i>\u2019s readers vote for their favorite song, author, and film of the year, among other categories. There is even a \u201c<\/span>Keep-up-the-good-work of the Year\u201d award to highlight individuals and groups championing work in the LBGT community. <\/span>You can find a complete list of the winners and categories <\/span>on wikipedia here.<\/span><\/a>

\n<\/span>Although the physical award show was canceled this year, the show went on… digitally. Arguably, the most prestigious awards are <\/span>\u00c5rets HBTQ och \u00c5rets hetero<\/span><\/i> \/ “LBGT Person of the Year” and “Hetero of the Year.” This brings us to our next question:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Vem vann i \u00e5r? <\/em>Who won this year?<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u00c5rets HBTQ<\/span><\/i> \/ LBGT Person of the Year is artist and musician Darin. He took two prizes this year, also winning with <\/span>\u00c5rets<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>Stockholm native <\/span>Darin Zanyar<\/span> kom ut <\/span><\/i>(came out) last summer after years in the entertainment industry. He reflected on coming out and winning the prize with this statement to <\/span>QX<\/span><\/i>:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/i>Vi har alla olika historier och resor som vi g\u00e5tt igenom och jag har en s\u00e5n stor respekt f\u00f6r alla hbtq- personer, f\u00f6r jag vet att det inte alltid \u00e4r s\u00e5 enkelt att vara gay i en straight v\u00e4rld.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Det som r\u00f6rt mig mest \u00e4r n\u00e4r jag ins\u00e5g hur mycket det faktiskt har hj\u00e4lpt andra som g\u00e5tt igenom samma sak och inte v\u00e5gat ta det klivet jag tog. Ni som d\u00e5 fick modet att ocks\u00e5 komma ut eller ber\u00e4tta f\u00f6r era n\u00e4rmsta, det h\u00e4r priset delar vi tillsammans!<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u00c5rets hetero \u00e4r Kronprincessan<\/em> \/ Hetero of the Year is the Crown Princess<\/span><\/h2>\n

Crown Princess Victoria’s title as \u201cstraight person of the year\u201d earned international headlines<\/a>.\u00a0 The Crown Princess gave a speech at last year\u2019s Stockholm Pride that struck a chord with the QX<\/em> subscriber base, prompting the award. See her reflection on winning this award via the Royal Family’s Instagram feed<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is this important as a language learner?<\/span><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s easy to get into a silo with language learning resources. But one must remember that Sweden is a living and breathing place with many different people and experiences. So, exploring other narratives will not only give you a richer vocabulary but also an array of connection points to draw from in your Swedish conversations.
