Sweden especially boasts that it&#8217;s one of the most family-friendly countries in the world due to its generous parental leave. Volvo has recently announced that all of their 40,000 employees, not just the once in Sweden, but globally, will be offered paid parental leave, regardless of gender. Today we\u2019ll dig into <em>f\u00f6r\u00e4ldraledighet<\/em> (parental leave) and the benefits that accompany it in Sweden, and elsewhere. We&#8217;ll also learn a few words that are helpful to know when discussing this topic in Swedish. Read on!\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Volvo&#8217;s Reasoning<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Volvo Cars CEO H\u00e5kan Samuelsson shared the company\u2019s motivation for granting parental leave to all employees: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201dVi vill skapa en kultur som st\u00f6der ett j\u00e4mst\u00e4llt f\u00f6r\u00e4ldraskap oavsett k\u00f6n. N\u00e4r f\u00f6r\u00e4ldrar f\u00e5r hj\u00e4lp med att balansera kraven fr\u00e5n arbetet och familjen bidrar det till att minska klyftan mellan k\u00f6nen och g\u00f6r att alla kan g\u00f6ra karri\u00e4r\u201d<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We want to create a culture that supports equal parenting regardless of gender. When parents get help balancing the demands of working and having a family, it contributes to lowering the divide between genders and makes it possible for everyone to keep their career.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As quoted from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gp.se\/ekonomi\/volvo-cars-inf%C3%B6r-betald-f%C3%B6r%C3%A4ldraledighet-1.43878252\">G\u00f6teborgs-Posten, 30 March 2021<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Compare and Contrasting Benefits<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, Vovlo is sponsoring 24 weeks of parental leave to all of its 40,000 employers worldwide. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/bulletin\/volumes\/98\/6\/19-229898\/en\/#:~:text=Although%20many%20countries%20have%20maternity,or%20exceed%2018%20weeks%20leave.\">World Health Organization<\/a> points out that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although many countries have maternity protection legislation, only 99 (out of 185) meet or exceed the minimal 14 weeks of paid maternity leave recommended by the International Labour Organization (ILO),<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">17<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 57 countries meet 14\u201317 weeks of leave, and just 42 countries meet or exceed 18 weeks leave.&#8221; Hmmm&#8230;. ? this made me curious so I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0dug up some stats using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/about-the-ilo\/newsroom\/news\/WCMS_008009\/lang--en\/index.htm\">International Labour Organisation (ILO)&#8217;s<\/a> website to see how other countries stack up:<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Sweden:<\/strong> If both parents take parental leave, up to 480 days of leave is granted, with about 80% of pay on average. These leave days can be used until the child is 8 years old. This covers newborns, adoptions, for all couples, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>European Union<\/strong>: Women in the E.U., regardless of the country, have the right to at least 14 weeks of maternity leave with an added two weeks before and after giving birth. This varies from 5 months in Italy to 12 weeks in Turkey.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Finland:<\/strong> In Finland, the mother has the right to 105 weekdays off. After that period, both parents share around 5 months of parental leave. Also, if you haven\u2019t heard of Finland\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/finland-gives-free-baby-kit-new-parents-more-harmonious-capitalism-2020-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">baby box<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, you need to check it out, ASAP. Talk about providing a kick start for all new babes born, look at those stylish onesies!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asian countries<\/strong> tended to have similar leave than E.U. countries. Japan offers 14 weeks maternity leave at 60% pay, and China offers 90 days at 100% pay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>North American<\/strong> countries Canada and Mexico offers paid maternity leave. Canada pays 55% of your wage for 17-18 weeks, and Mexico covers 100% of your wage for 12 weeks.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>United States:<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The U.S. does not actually have a federal paid maternity. FMLA, The Family and Medical <\/span>Leave<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Act guarantees 12 weeks of unpaid leave t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">o care for a newborn, newly adopted child, or an ill family member. Depending on the state you live in, or your employer, you may receive additional benefits. At 3 months families must consider childcare which can be costly and difficult to find depending on where you live&#8230; ? \u2018nuff said.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Word of the Day!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, Transparent Language has a Swedish word of the day.
