Today, <em>Sveriges radio<\/em> announced the 58 Swedes who will narrate personal stories, reflections, dreams, and critiques with audiences this summer. Comedians, actors, composers, CEOs, songwriters, even an astronaut, and a chess player join the roster of 2021&#8217;s <em>Sommar i P1<\/em>. A true <em>sm\u00f6rg\u00e5sbord<\/em> of Swedish language speakers, dialects, and life experiences, this iconic Swedish program is a must-listen for Swedish students.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sommarprat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (summer chat) was broadcast on Swedish Radio&#8217;s P3 in 1959. The program run every weekday from Swedish Midsommar, the 26th of June this year, through the 22nd of August. A different <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sommarpratare<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (\u201csummer speaker\u201d) is featured each day, pairing narration with interludes of music to cultivate an intimate 90 minutes between listeners and the program host.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being invited to host a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sommarprat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is considered an honor. Film giant Ingmar Bergman, pop trailblazer Robyn, members of ABBA, literary greats like Astrid Lindgren, even IKEA\u2019s Ingvar Kamprad and Spotify\u2019s Daniel Ek have all held a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sommarprat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In 2020, Greta Thunberg hosted her program in English called \u201cHumanity has not yet failed.\u201d BBC broadcasted Greta&#8217;s <em>sommarprat<\/em> introducing the Swedish series<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to an international audience.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Swedish journalist and radio producer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bibi R\u00f6d\u00f6\u00f6 has been the <em>programchef<\/em> (Program Director) for <em>Sommar i P1 <\/em>for 25 years and is credited with its increase in popularity and diversity of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sommarv\u00e4rdarna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (the summer hosts). The 2021 season is bookended by two Swedish musicians, both 23 years old. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sverigesradio.se\/avsnitt\/1732987?programid=2071\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Benjamin Ingrosso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0kicks it off on <em>Midsommar <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sverigesradio.se\/avsnitt\/1740734?programid=2071\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zara Larsson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> closes the season on August 22. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s custom for each participant to wear a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">midsommarkrans <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(flower head wreath) for their press photos. Spend it with Parisa Amiri and Jason Diakit\u00e9<\/a>&#8221; and I featured her in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/6-swedish-women-to-follow-on-instagram\/\">6 Swedish Women to Follow on Instagram<\/a> as well.\u00a0 She\u2019s a journalist and TV host who keeps a critical eye on pop culture and politics. Finalist in Swedish Idol and winner of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Melodifestivalen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Tusse will use his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sommarprat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to share anecdotes of finding love and support during his time as a refugee, as well as the new opportunities he was granted with life in Sweden:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; I mitt Sommar ska jag ber\u00e4tta om mina \u00e4lskade sl\u00e4ktingar, de som var min trygghet under tiden p\u00e5 flykt, och om hur de har tagit vara p\u00e5 de fantastiska m\u00f6jligheter som Sverige har gett oss.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">12 augusti <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sverigesradio.se\/avsnitt\/1732861?programid=2071\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anna-Lena Laur\u00e9n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, journalist<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This Finlandssvensk (Finnish-Swedish) journalist and author is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dagens nyheter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8216;s Russia correspondent. Living in Moscow, she is a 7-time author and recipient of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guldpennan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> award. Her talk will address the meaning of Finnish concept and way of life \u201csisu,\u201d her difficult relationship with God, and climate change:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; Jag kommer att tala om sisu och n\u00e5d. You\u2019ve maybe seen her recently on the Netflix series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">K\u00e4rlek och anarki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Love and Anarchy). Her <em>sommarprat<\/em> will be about memories, identity, longing, and how she became an actor:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>&#8211; Mitt program kommer bland annat handla om minnen och identitet. Vem \u00e4r jag utan mina minnen? Vad h\u00e4nder om vi gl\u00f6mmer v\u00e5r historia. Och s\u00e5 kommer jag ber\u00e4tta om varf\u00f6r jag till slut blev sk\u00e5despelare, rastl\u00f6sheten och den konstanta l\u00e4ngtan bort.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are a beginning Swedish student, comprehension will be difficult here. But don&#8217;t underestimate the value of allowing yourself to just listen to Swedish in a relaxed way. Get used to the rhythm of the narration, and focus less on understanding, and more on how the words sound to you.
