At one o’clock in the afternoon, when summer temperatures are at their highest, sun-loving Swedes take a respite and adjust the dial to <\/span>Sommar i P1<\/span><\/i>. Today, Sveriges radio<\/em> announced the 58 Swedes who will narrate personal stories, reflections, dreams, and critiques with audiences this summer. Comedians, actors, composers, CEOs, songwriters, even an astronaut, and a chess player join the roster of 2021’s Sommar i P1<\/em>. A true sm\u00f6rg\u00e5sbord<\/em> of Swedish language speakers, dialects, and life experiences, this iconic Swedish program is a must-listen for Swedish students.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The first <\/span>sommarprat<\/span><\/i> (summer chat) was broadcast on Swedish Radio’s P3 in 1959. The program run every weekday from Swedish Midsommar, the 26th of June this year, through the 22nd of August. A different <\/span>sommarpratare<\/span><\/i> (\u201csummer speaker\u201d) is featured each day, pairing narration with interludes of music to cultivate an intimate 90 minutes between listeners and the program host.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Being invited to host a <\/span>sommarprat<\/span><\/i> is considered an honor. Film giant Ingmar Bergman, pop trailblazer Robyn, members of ABBA, literary greats like Astrid Lindgren, even IKEA\u2019s Ingvar Kamprad and Spotify\u2019s Daniel Ek have all held a <\/span>sommarprat<\/span><\/i>. In 2020, Greta Thunberg hosted her program in English called \u201cHumanity has not yet failed.\u201d BBC broadcasted Greta’s sommarprat<\/em> introducing the Swedish series<\/span> to an international audience.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Swedish journalist and radio producer <\/span>Bibi R\u00f6d\u00f6\u00f6 has been the programchef<\/em> (Program Director) for Sommar i P1 <\/em>for 25 years and is credited with its increase in popularity and diversity of <\/span>sommarv\u00e4rdarna<\/span><\/i> (the summer hosts). The 2021 season is bookended by two Swedish musicians, both 23 years old. <\/span>Benjamin Ingrosso<\/span><\/a>\u00a0kicks it off on Midsommar <\/em><\/span>and <\/span>Zara Larsson<\/span><\/a> closes the season on August 22. <\/span>It\u2019s custom for each participant to wear a <\/span>midsommarkrans <\/span><\/i>(flower head wreath) for their press photos. 1 augusti <\/span>Parisa Amiri<\/span><\/a>, journalist, f\u00f6rfattare<\/span><\/h2>\n

You\u2019ve met Parisa on this blog before with “Got a kvart? Spend it with Parisa Amiri and Jason Diakit\u00e9<\/a>” and I featured her in 6 Swedish Women to Follow on Instagram<\/a> as well.\u00a0 She\u2019s a journalist and TV host who keeps a critical eye on pop culture and politics. Parisa will use her sommarprat<\/em> to reflect on her journey in the media branch and what she\u2019s learned about equity, justice, and identity in the process:<\/span><\/p>\n

– Jag ska vara hyfsat \u00e4rlig om att krisa, att ha hamnat p\u00e5 en helt annan bana \u00e4n den t\u00e4nkta och att ha slut p\u00e5 m\u00e5l efter att ha dr\u00f6mt om fr\u00e5gesport. 7 augusti <\/span>Tousin \u201dTusse\u201d Chiza<\/span><\/a>, s\u00e5ngare
\n<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you follow Eurovision, you\u2019ll recognize Tusse as Sweden\u2019s representative. Finalist in Swedish Idol and winner of <\/span>Melodifestivalen<\/span><\/i>, Tusse will use his <\/span>sommarprat <\/span><\/i>to share anecdotes of finding love and support during his time as a refugee, as well as the new opportunities he was granted with life in Sweden:<\/span><\/p>\n

– I mitt Sommar ska jag ber\u00e4tta om mina \u00e4lskade sl\u00e4ktingar, de som var min trygghet under tiden p\u00e5 flykt, och om hur de har tagit vara p\u00e5 de fantastiska m\u00f6jligheter som Sverige har gett oss.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

12 augusti <\/span>Anna-Lena Laur\u00e9n<\/span><\/a>, journalist<\/span><\/h2>\n

This Finlandssvensk (Finnish-Swedish) journalist and author is <\/span>Dagens nyheter<\/span><\/i>‘s Russia correspondent. Living in Moscow, she is a 7-time author and recipient of the <\/span>Guldpennan<\/span><\/i> award. Her talk will address the meaning of Finnish concept and way of life \u201csisu,\u201d her difficult relationship with God, and climate change:<\/span><\/p>\n

– Jag kommer att tala om sisu och n\u00e5d. Sisu betyder att inte ge sig. N\u00e5d betyder \u00f6verraskningar d\u00e4r man minst anar det. B\u00e4gge har spelat stor roll i mitt liv.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

15 augusti <\/span>Gizem Erdogan<\/span><\/a>, sk\u00e5despelare<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/h2>\n

This award-winning actor is most known for her role in SVT\u2019s <\/span>Tunna bl\u00e5 linjen<\/span><\/i> (Thin Blue Line). You\u2019ve maybe seen her recently on the Netflix series <\/span>K\u00e4rlek och anarki<\/span><\/i> (Love and Anarchy). Her sommarprat<\/em> will be about memories, identity, longing, and how she became an actor:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

– Mitt program kommer bland annat handla om minnen och identitet. Vem \u00e4r jag utan mina minnen? Vad h\u00e4nder om vi gl\u00f6mmer v\u00e5r historia. Och s\u00e5 kommer jag ber\u00e4tta om varf\u00f6r jag till slut blev sk\u00e5despelare, rastl\u00f6sheten och den konstanta l\u00e4ngtan bort.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If you are a beginning Swedish student, comprehension will be difficult here. But don’t underestimate the value of allowing yourself to just listen to Swedish in a relaxed way. Get used to the rhythm of the narration, and focus less on understanding, and more on how the words sound to you. If you’re an intermediate or advanced student, chose a sommarprat<\/em> to work on and create an outline of the speech, or simply highlight words or phrases that stick out to you.<\/p>\n
